Overview

This book is primarily about the poetry of the Hellenistic period. Then it is about certain of the visual arts: sculpture, painting, mosaics, and jewelry. I have not discussed philosophical of rhetorical schools, nor have I dealt with drama. I have not used the fragments in the Supplementum Hellenisticum of parsons and Lloyd-Jones or in Powell's Collecteana Alexandrina, because I though them too lacking in context to be of interest to my audience.

    Very useful and thought-provoking

As a companion to the reading of Hellenistic poetry, this book is invaluable. It is written in a lively and enthusiastic fashion that conveys the nuanced qualities of the Hellenistic spirit very well. One might quibble with some of her interpretations, and there is much more that could be said about the art of the period, but all in all, the book is extremely thought-provoking and valuable.
