Overview

The old mill has been silent for a hundred years, its dread secrets locked from view. Still, the people of Westover, Massachusetts, remember . . . and whisper of that terrible day when horrifying flames claimed eleven innocent young lives. The day the mill's doors slammed shut--forever.

But now, the last of the once-powerful Sturgess family is about to unlock those doors again . . . and unleash an elemental fury. For behind the padlocks, deep within the dark, abandoned building, a terrible vengeance waits. A vengeance conceived in HELLFIRE.

    An Excellent Historical Thriller

This is one of my favourite John Saul novels. The plot of a 19th Century shoemill re-opening in the 20th Century as a modern shopping mall is a prelude to the plot of his serial novel THE BLACKSTONE CHRONICLES. Anyone with a love of history will see the allusion to the labor law reforming Triangle Shirtwaist Fire of New York state back in 1911. A young girl moves with her mother and stepfather to a house with a family that is not at all receptive to them. The ghost of a girl her age who perished in the shoemill factory becomes her 'friend', and tragic events are blamed on her. Suspenseful from beginning to end--what is the complete story behind the fire? What is the historical significance of the Sturgess family and various characters in the story? Will the mill be reopened as a mall, or will a malevolent force destroy this plan? Find out by reading this exciting novel.

    Good Book!

I enjoyed this book. It was the first John Saul book I have read. There was a surprising twist near the end.

    GREAT!!!!

This book was great, I thought it was one of Saul's best works. So far I have read about 10 of his novels and am trying to read them all, but I know once I do I'll never find another writer like him! The ending is very very chilling and suspenseful, this bok kept me guessing!

    John never disappoints me!

I just started my 15th book. And plan to add the rest of his books to my collection. Just hope he keeps it up. Considering I'm a very picky reader. Once you start this book, you won't be able to put it down.

    John Saul has style

With John Saul's books, you can't tell whether the ending will be perfectly happy, or strangly sad. His endings are never the same, and are always surprising. This book is no exception. It's been about a year since I read this one, so I don't remember much about it, but I do know I liked it.

    THE BEST BOOK

This was the best book i've ever read!! It was so unpredictable, and I was shocked when something happened that I didn't think he would make happen. I couldn't put this book down until I was finished. This is the one book I would recommend to ANYONE! Like it says one the back of so many of his books, 'John Saul has the natural instincts of a great story teller.'

    2nd book, still impressed

If you enjoy reading Stephen King, you will also enjoy Saul. At no point in the book did I ever lose interest and while sitting at work kept trying to sneak a few pages in.
