School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-- Bell's long and full life is briefly chronicled. Lewis focuses on his personal traits, early experiences, and family background to explain how, as a 29-year-old teacher of the deaf, he came to invent the telephone. She breaks no new ground, but her text is straightforward, factual, and readable due to the inclusion of many interesting anecdotes. The format is clean, well designed, and appealing; illustrations include black-and-white drawings, paintings, and vintage photographs. Robert Quackenbush's Ahoy! Ahoy! Are You There? (Prentice-Hall, 1981; o.p.) is a humorous approach to much the same material for a similar audience. --Tatiana Castleton, Stockton-San Joaquin County Public Library, CA
