Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Animals are fascinating and young children should be encouraged to learn the names of both domestic and wild animals. In this high contrast (black and white) board book with splashes of color in shiny foil, young ones are introduced to ten animals. The panda is munching on bamboo leaves and the cow is chewing on the grass and flowers. There is a snake wrapped around a branch and a young tiger practicing his roar. The zebra is clip-clopping along and a long necked giraffe is taking a drink. The penguin is waddling along and a fish swims among the kelp. Each animal is greeted with a hello and then there are two words that relate to how it moves or some other characteristic such as the sound it makes. The closing page depicts a leopard resting on a branch for the night, but these animals are nocturnal and would be hunting at night and sleeping during the day. That aside, it is an attractive book and kids will have fun pointing to and naming the animals. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
