Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Bugs are little and babies and toddlers often find these critters intriguing. I personally remember watching ants and watching my little brother do the same. In this high contrast (black and white) board book with splashes of color in shiny foil, young ones are introduced to ten bugs. Technically the worm, snail, and caterpillar depicted are not bugs but annelida, mollusca and arthropods respectively, but little ones won't be so exacting. The ladybug scurries up a leaf while the caterpillar munches on a leaf. The bee buzzes around flowers and the snail glides while the worm wiggles. The illustrations are appealing and attention grabbing. All the creatures have been portrayed to make them attractive (the spider has a smile) and the text is quite simple. Each animal is greeted with a hello and then there are two words that relate to how it moves or some other characteristic such as the sound it makes. The only deviation to the pattern is on the final page and it is quite appropriate. A charming board book indeed and a companion to Hello Animals. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

Brightly colored foil accents jazz up an infant-friendly black-and-white introduction to a variety of familiar and friendly creepy-crawlies. Onomatopoeia provides a little linguistic whimsy to accompany the otherwise-straightforward text. "Hello, Ladybug! (scurry, scurry) / Hello, Caterpillar! (munch, munch)"—and so on to the final page: "Bye-bye, Butterfly! (flit, float)." The critters all grin broadly and gaze with distinctly un-insectlike eyes out at the readers (the bee is particularly nonthreatening). Judicious use of foil serves to add color without detracting from the high-contrast effect; the snail has small red dots on its shell, and the worm pokes up its head among some shiny blades of green grass. Together with its companion, Hello, Animals! (ISBN: 978-1-58925-861-7), it's an enjoyable introduction to the great outdoors that will gently stimulate the visual cortex to boot. (Board book. 0-6 mos.)

My 6 month old loved looking at the high-contrast pictures, and even at 18 months he loves reading it over and over again. The book is primarily in high-contrast black-and-white, with one different shiny color that pops out on each page. The board book format makes it friendly for little hands. Great baby shower gift!
