Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leona Illig
What is a puppy? A little girl is about to find out—she has a brand new puppy, and there are many things that she does not understand about her pet. She soon discovers that her puppy needs lots of sleep, exercise, and food, not to mention a time and a place to "do his business" outside the house. The little girl realizes that after her puppy has what he needs, then he can play with her by running in the yard and licking her face. The main idea behind this book—that pets are not playthings, but living creatures with their own needs—is presented in clear language that even very young children will be able to understand. The text is sparse, large, and bold, and the repetition of phrases may encourage children to begin recognizing letters and words. The illustrations are done in muted pastels and are quite large, which is helpful for young children who are beginning to focus their eyes and see what is around them. Not to be confused in any way with the commercial hit "Hello, Kitty," this book is a good one to read to toddlers at bedtime. Reviewer: Leona Illig

PreS-Gr 1—This feel-good book shows a preschooler interacting with her pet. It opens with the question: "What's that puppy doing? She's sleeping. Puppies need lots of sleep." The simple sentences are paired with cozy pastel illustrations. The youngster explores the puppy's behavior indoors and out with a special emphasis on play and fun. The story gives young readers a good sense of the responsibility of taking care of a pet.—Katie Cerasale-Messina, AC Whelan Elementary School, Revere, MA
Kirkus Reviews
Soft-focus, charming pastel illustrations are the defining feature of this appealing story of a preschool-aged little girl interacting with her new puppy. The simple text uses a question-and-answer format with a repeating question structure ("What's puppy doing?") and short answers describing the puppy's behavior. The thoughtful design includes a larger type size for the questions, predictable placement of the questions on left-hand pages (followed by one or more pages describing the corresponding answer) and double-page-spread illustrations that will work well in front of a group of children. Cowen-Fletcher's illustrations are just right, with a giggling, curly-headed little girl and a wriggling little puppy that will appeal to both children and adults. An additional positive point is that both the child and the dog are girls, a plus in a subject area crowded with male dogs. The deceptively simple story can be used with a wide variety of ages: from toddlers ready for a first, simple story structure to preschool storytimes featuring puppies to emerging readers ready to try a story with just a few lines of text. A sweet but not saccharine treat. (Picture book. 1-6)

Meet the Author

Jane Cowen-Fletcher wrote this book because her family "finally got a dog — after years of pleading from our daughter. Coco was all puppy and prompted our children to continually ask, ‘What’s that puppy doing?’, to which the answer was usually, ‘Making us all fall in love with her by not much more than the mad wagging of her tail!’" Jane Cowen-Fletcher lives in South Berwick, Maine.
