Children's Literature
Malinda Martha tucks her trusty camera, Clicky, into her backpack as they set off for an African adventure. Malinda Martha and Clicky snap their way through a drive in the Ngorongoro Crater. She uses Clicky's zoom lens and wide angle to capture a lioness and her cubs in the grass. As Clicky takes the photos the reader will learn how the camera grabs light, focuses, maximizes depth of field, and captures images. The author is a photography buff and traveler who based this story on an actual African adventure. She created this story from her memories of observing a lioness and four lion cubs for three hours. The illustrator used Kanga cloth designs to create intricate and colorful borders for each page. She included authentic drawings of birds and animals native to Africa, and labeled each one for identification on the back page along with a map of Africa. Children will enjoy finding the little mouse she has hidden on each two-page spread. 2000, Images Press, and $6.95. Ages 4 to 8. Reviewer: Cheryl Peterson

K-Gr 2-A family trip to the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania is related from the point of view of Clicky the camera. Perhaps one shouldn't expect much depth from a camera (even one with a zoom lens), but this shallow tale of a lioness and her cubs as immortalized by an anthropomorphized photo device is less than compelling. Though Arciero's borders (inspired by African animals and kanga cloth) are really quite nice, the smiling tourists, guides, lions, and other animals in Clicky's pictures are just too merry. The tiny mouse tucked into each double-page spread will provide some entertainment for children who lose track of the story line, but there are better ways to learn about Africa, lions, and cameras.-Jody McCoy, The Bush School, Seattle, WA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
