I adopted a 7 year old that had been severely abused both physically and sexually by his biological mother and step-father. The biological father had been crying fowl for 4 years, but because he was a blue collar worker with limited funds and the bio-mom was a great actress the system ignored his pleas. He never gave up on his son and saved his life. But it left him traumatized and unable to function normally in society. As the child's new mom this book was introduced to me by his therapist. It helped me understand "why" he reacted the way he did. I think all teachers should read this book. ABUSE IS NOT BASED ON ECONOMIC STATUS!!! The wealthier the abuser is the easier it is for them to hide it. Children who have been traumatized will not act the same as children raised in a loving home. They aren't exhibiting poor behavior. They are exhibiting survival techniques. The children will adapt, but only when the adults around them use the correct methods. This book opened my eyes. I buy it for my son's teachers. They are poorly trained. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
