Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heidi Hauser Green
Here, the much-loved Charlie and Lola are cast in a modern boy-who-cried-wolf tale. Lola is in the "boy" role here, with her friend Lotta; Charlie and his friend Marv are in the role of those called on to help. First, the girls call for help when they are playing with Caspar the cat. Charlie and Marv come running! But there is no emergency. Next, while eating lunch, Lotta wonders aloud if the boys will come again if they call "Help?" They try it. True to form, the boys do come running. They get annoyed at being tricked. Later, when Caspar escapes and ends up in a tree, Lola turns to Charlie for help. Predictably, he doesn't believe her request for help. The story ends well for everyone (except, perhaps, Caspar, who has had to tolerate a stripy hat). Readers may come to understand, as Lola and Lotta do, that they shouldn't call for help unless they really need it—else they may not be believed during a true emergency. Unfortunately, this message seems a little diffused by the actual ending, in which Caspar saves himself; after all, it ultimately didn't matter to the outcome whether the boys believed the girls or not. They didn't save the day. This is not the best "Charlie and Lola" book, but they are popular characters and the book should appeal to their hardcore fans. It would be an inexpensive addition to home or public libraries. Reviewer: Heidi Hauser Green
