Rookie BL manga that hits nearly all the tropes

This is the first manga for Nagisa Shinohara and unfortunately it shows. There are four stories offered ranging from humor to the austere. Yet, all seem to be missing something so that you’re never quite satisfied. The artist also appears to have a little bit of trouble with proportion as sometimes hands and other appendages appeared quite large. Though, I love the composition of the cover and her color work on it. But, the strong point of this book is that most of the chapters have very explicit eroticism which is probably how it earned the “Too Hot for Kindle” label.

As for the adaptation from Guild group BL Angels, I didn’t find any glaring errors or rough dialogue. I actually liked that Japanese honorifics were used as well in this case. Their presence further helped to reinforce in the cover story that the petite 5’ 1” Kobayashi is in fact the senior to 6’ 1” Shinobu. Many times Kobayashi is drawn quite cutely despite being in his twenties. Coupled with the explicit nature of the book this otherwise would likely lead to some squeamish reactions for the reader. Whoever picked the name Help Me Reach the Top Shelf for the title did a good job too since it is a very cute phrase.
Unfortunately, the format did offer some issues though. I had to zoom every page to view the book in the most optimal way on my Nook Color. Otherwise diagonal and circular lines ended up looking jagged and other artifacts were present on the pages.

In the end this BL manga is a little bit of sometimes slightly sweet, largely explicit fluff. Shinohara might have a little fun with popular conventions but, she does little to particularly make her first manga stand out from the crowd.

Recommended only if you want some smex and spontaneous love confessions.
