The summary covers everything you need to know from Anne Lamott's full-length book "Help, Thanks, WoW: The Three Essential Prayers." The 30-minute version hits all the points that Lamott talks about, especially concerning personal faith and belief, which I think is the most important of Lamott's conversations. Though what you can learn through Lamott's words applies no matter your religion, no matter what you believe. If you use prayer honestly, focusing on the helping aspect, the gratitude, and the wow factor of life, you can benefit yourself and others.

Anne Lamott's book HELP, THANKS, WOW is a simple, yet profound, introduction to the power of prayer through surrender, gratitude and wonder.  The first important part of any prayer is a cry for help, an acceptance of your own desperation and a sense of surrender.  This type of prayer is often a response to a challenge or a situation in life that causes pain, suffering and despair.  When you ask for help you admit to being challenged, you open up to God's will and the process of transformation begins. The second element to prayer is thanks, or gratitude, which is a condition that acts as a self fulfilling prophecy.  Being grateful actually gives you more to be grateful about, this feedback loop of joy can be used to celebrate something positive and also to endure something negative.  Thanks in prayer is the cultivation of a sense of peace that makes gratitude its own reward.  The last element to powerful affirmative prayer is a sense of wonder that Lamott calls WOW.  A vision of beauty or sorrow that takes your breath away.  She says this is often felt when observing nature or distilled into the creation of art, dance and poetry.  This book is filled with great quotes, wonderful advice and is written in an approachable non pretentious way.  I highly recommend it!

Though I grew up in a quasi-religious home, I would not consider myself a religious person, but I do believe in the power of prayer. I shied away from the full version of the book as it is not a topic I would traditionally read about, but I figured the summary might give me a better idea of what to expect without committing so much time. I resonated with the idea that though we may have very different ideas about God and prayer, that the concept still holds water. It doesn't matter to whom we pray.
