Editorial Reviews

VOYA
AGERANGE: Ages 11 to 14.

A splashy tabloid-style presentation, including gross and disgusting photographs, will attract curious young teens who will be unable to resist this series. Both titles have identical formats, including a "warning" to readers about disturbing content that will, of course, make most teens want to read on. The heart of both books can be found in the "true-life cases." In Tilden's book on infectious diseases, readers can find out about a middle-aged man in California who almost died from necrotizing fasciitis. In Brownlee's book Cute, Furry and Deadly, they will read about a girl who got monkeypox from her pet prairie dog and a kitten that almost caused an outbreak of rabies in Maryland. Each book also includes career information, resources (including Web sites and books), a historical section with key dates, and an author's note. Readers will find factual substance in the midst of the sensationalism, but this series succeeds mostly at piquing teens' interest rather than delivering enough content for homework or research. The slightly hysterical tone of the series, which also offers books on blood suckers, worms, bird flu, and more, might also be needlessly alarming to some youth. With these limits in mind, this series is a great pick for reluctant readers, busy teens, and anyone looking for a fun (if somewhat frightening) nonfiction read. Reviewer: Amy Luedtke
