Overview

As nearly four million readers have learned from his three previous
books, Dave Pelzer doesn't believe in feeling sorry for himself. Abused
mercilessly by his mother as a child, Dave has taken everything that
happened to him and turned it into something positive so that he can
help others. Now happily married and with a child of his own, he
celebrates the twin pillars of strength that saw him through his darkest
hours: resilience and gratitude. And he shows how anyone can tap into
these virtues to live a better and more fulfilling life.

In Help Yourself, Dave Pelzer explains how to move beyond a
painful history, harmful negative thoughts, and innumerable setbacks by
urging readers to take control and be accountable for their lives.
Filled with his own history, as well as the personal struggles of others
who have learned how to turn adversity into triumph, Help
Yourself
is a rousing call to readers who want real answers to real
problems. Never before in paperback, it will undoubtedly join Pelzer's
previous paperbacks on bestseller lists for years to come.

Meet the Author

Dave Pelzer
Dave Pelzer is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Child Called “It", The Lost Boy, A Man Named Dave, Help Yourself, and The Privilege of Youth. He travels more than 250 days a year throughout the nation speaking to large groups of youth and adults on the topics of resilience and overcoming obstacles.  He has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Larry King Live, and The Montel Williams Show, among other national shows.

Biography

Dave Pelzer has experienced a truly extraordinary life. As a child, he endured the horrors of child abuse, which included physical torture, mental cruelty, and near starvation. Upon Dave's rescue, he was identified as one of the most severely abused children in California's history. At age 12, Dave's teachers risked their careers to notify the authorities and saved his life. Upon Dave's removal, he was made a ward of the court and placed in foster care until he enlisted in the U. S. Air Force at age 18. As a young adult Dave was determined to better himself—no matter what the odds.

As a member of the armed forces, Dave was handpicked to midair-refuel the highly secretive SR-71 Blackbird and the F-117 Stealth Fighter, which played a major role in Operations Just Cause, Desert Shield, and Desert Storm.

Some of Dave's distinctive accomplishments have been recognized through a number of awards, as well as personal commendations from Presidents Reagan, Bush, and Clinton. In 1990, he was the recipient of the J. C. Penney Golden Rule Award, making him the California Volunteer of the Year. In 1993, Dave was honored as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Americans. He joins a distinguished group of alumni that include: John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Anne Bancroft, Orson Welles, Walt Disney, and Nelson Rockefeller. In 1994, Dave was the only American to be honored as one of The Outstanding Young Persons of the World. He also carried the coveted Centennial flame for the 1996 Olympics.

Dave's incredible life story was featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Montel Williams Show, Sally Jessy, Leeza Gibbons, and Barbara Walters's The View.

Dave is one of the few personalities who pay homage to educators, social services, foster care, law enforcement, and volunteers—those who make a difference in the lives of children. On the road over 250 days of the year, Dave offers programs for corporate groups, human services, and youth-at-risk. Dave's experience includes: Juvenile Hall Counselor, Youth Service Worker, Troy State University (human services studies), National Advisor, Missing Youth Foundation, Board of Directors, Foster Care ILP, and Certified Correctional Custody Program Facilitator.

Dave's unique and intriguing outlook on life, coupled with his Robin Williams-like wit and sense of humor, entertain and encourage men and women to overcome any obstacle while living life to its fullest. Dave is a living testament of resilience, faith in humanity, and personal responsibility. This is what makes him one of the most exceptional and unequaled entities of today. As an author, educator, and consultant, Dave has dedicated his life helping others…to help themselves.

An outstanding and Truly remarkable book

I have just finished reading 'A child called It'. One of the best and heart-throbbing books I have read in a long time. I read it non-stop and cried all the way to the end and finished the book within four hours. What a miracle to this child who had come a long way. I can never picture that anyone can be so cruel to their own child. I loved the book so much, that I ended up getting them all. If those who haven't read Dave Pelzer's books. You should...

This book may change your life

After reading in the local paper that David had spoken at our local high school, I decided to go pick up his books. I purchased all of them...there was no way I could get only one. When I came to read this title 'Help Yourself', I never knew what would happen next. I lived with a past that haunted me every day (no way in comparision to David's). I never could forgive. Until I read this book. And I realized, if he can do it, I can do it. And he was right, to hate someone doesn't hurt them...it hurts you. So when you forgive, you're doing it for you. This book changed my life. I recommend it to everyone. Even if you don't have a past that haunts you.

David had a lot of courage!

David had alot of strenghth mentally and physically to let the world know how his child hood was he is a strong and wonderful man and a very lucky person to had overcome what he did. Not only physically and mentally did he get scarred but what he went through must of all killed him emotionally to have your on mother turn on you and treat you like his mother treated him . He is a great writer and encourager for youths all around. His books are my favorites I give him alot of credit for his writing. He is a strong individual.

DAVE PELZER IS A TRUE SURVIVOR..

I have found his books to be both frightening and powerful. Even as a small child he would not give in. I've read his books more than once.. They can give anyone real insight on a horrible problem that effects children every day... some don't make it . I'm glad to have read Dave's books.

One of the best out of the best!

I was the kind of person who does not like to read people's sad stories. But, Dave's series are truly exceptional. Not only I have stayed up until 3am every night, just to finish all his first 3 books. I am now looking forward to purchase his 'Help yourself' book. His books have changed me and I am now a more sensitive mother and wife to my family. Thanks, Dave for your remarkable influence on me!!! Thanks again!

    Helping Yourself in abusive Relationships

Dave Pelzer is one of my favorite authors and so far I have read all of his books in his series A Child Called "It". This Specific book, Help Yourself is for those who may be in a abusive relationship and need guidence. He goes step by step in how to get out of it. He talks about the dilemmas of unresolved issues , forgiving, and letting go, and many more important topics. I loved the first books in this, series so naturally i loved this one. I think every one should read his entire series, so they know what some unfortunate people go though.

This is one of the BEST self-help books I have ever read!

This book is outstanding! I would give it more than five stars if I had been allowed. I checked it out from the library and after reading it, I know it is a book that I must own. I plan to refer to it often, underline, highlight and use as a reference. Pelzer is such an amazing positive example of how people can triumph over situations that others may see as insurmountable. He shares what he did to overcome his childhood and does so in a positive, growth-oriented way. He made my problems seem so small, yet never 'wallows' in pity--he talks about how to let go and move on. I would recommend this to anybody who is working on abuse issues.

    The Way to Healing

I have read all of David's books and there is no way to describe David other than to say he is a true hero and inspiration to victims of abuse. There is much wisdom spoken in this book, but the two most outstanding sections deal with cleansing the soul and getting rid of the baggage of the past. As a doctor, I have spoken with many survivors of abuse. If you can learn to let go of the past, learn to forgive what you could not control, and find peace of mind and contentment within yourself, you are already well on the way to healing. I also highly recommend 'Open Your Mind, Open Your Life: A Book of Eastern Wisdom' by Taro Gold which contains hundreds of empowering quotations and inspiring affirmations.
