Kroen has written a highly useful book

This book should be a part of the library of every pastor and clinician. It is arranged to be quickly and easily referred to for the different ages and developmental stages of children. It provides good tools to help any one who is trying to understand and help a grieving child. It is a valuable book.

    My Thoughts

My mom gave me this book she had picked up at B&N during the 6 weeks my husband was hospitalized. As his surrogage, I chose to let him die rather than live(if that's what you call it)in a vegetative state. I tried to follow the general guidelines of this book and although it's only been 2 months since his death, I feel it has helped tremendously. I am raising 8 year old twin boys. As the book suggested, I took them to see dad in the hospital when he was awake, then in a coma and finally on the ventilator being read his late rites. My sons came to Hospice and spent a couple hours in his room surrounded by grandparents, aunts and uncles. I took them home and about an hour later he passed. My sons knew within minutes of their dad's passing. They were present for the entire viewing and burial. They watched the casket being lowered into the ground. They threw white roses on the casket and basically dangled their arms in the hole where their father rested. At the viewing, a co-worker of my husband's approached me and told me about her own experience. She was 8 when her mom got sick and died. She said no one told her what was going on and that she was angry to this day because she was not given the chance to say goodbye. She hugged me and said my boys are going to grow to be well-adjusted men. I can only hope my sons will be spared of that anger that seems to plague the children affected by the loss of a parent. This book was easy to follow, catagorized by ages and types of loss and included personal experiences for every age. It even helped me to understand my own grief. I have read parts of this book to my 8 year olds in the hopes they too would recognize their own feelings were normal. Both my sons seem to be adjusting to our new life. One had about a month of disruptive behavior in class, but that seemed to fizzle when I was able to spend more quality time with them after the funeral. I am keeping this book tucked away, unfortune is a lottery and I don't mean the winning kind.
