This book focuses on helping individuals improve basic communication skills. By doing so, it helps the non-specialist assist clients with everyday coping skills. Last revised in 1996, it is now in its seventh edition. The purpose is two-fold. The first is to describe the human helping process in non-technical terminology. The second is to provide guidelines to help readers understand the concepts of helping, as described in the research literature. These are extremely worthy objectives -- the authors focus on helping individuals help themselves. Through the various skill clusters and chapter highlights, the objectives are met. I agree with the authors that this book is written for anyone who works with people. Not enough information is provided about the authors to judge their credibility. However, given that the book is in its seventh edition, one could assume the authors are credible in this area. This book describes the helping process. It details the characteristics of helpers and the process of helping, and provides skill clusters to help the reader practice these skills. Specific sections discuss helping during periods of loss and crisis, action and behavior changes, as well as ethical issues related to helping. One unique feature is the discussion of the helping process as cited in the literature. Another is the presentation of the helping process in service-related fields as well as business settings. A shortcoming is a lack of updated references. This edition has included different research studies from which examples of the helping process are based. An increased focus on multicultural helping issues is presented. In addition, a section on compassion andspirituality as motivators in the helping process has been included.
