From The CriticsReviewer: Kehinde Adekola, MBBS (Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
Description: This book is an in-depth fount of information on the basic physiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of hematologic disorders. It is an update of the 2009 edition and makes good use of pictures, tables, and diagrams to present the information.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an up-to-date, informative, scholarly, user-friendly book for everyone involved in the field of hematology, ranging from basic science bench researchers to clinical hematologists. These are excellent objectives and the authors certainly meet them, with an outstanding textbook with a wealth of information on both basic and esoteric hematologic disorders.
Audience: Hematologists — scientists and clinicians - are the intended audience. This is an excellent resource for anyone in the field of hematology — medical students, graduate students, bench technicians, medical residents, fellows, and nurses who would like an informative book that addresses all aspects of hematologic disorders. The contributors are among the world's leading experts in hematology and have the wealth of experience and knowledge to address the goals.
Features: The book covers the physiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of both benign and malignant hematologic disorders. The text is accompanied by detailed images, diagrams, tables, and color pictures. I especially appreciate the consultative hematology section that focuses on hematologic disorders that commonly occur, but are usually left out of general textbooks. An exciting feature of this edition is the accompanying online version, which is excellent in this information age. The fact that the online version will be updated as new information becomes available is a plus.
Assessment: This outstanding book will be a great resource to hematologists in practice and in training all over the world. It is current and, with plans for continually supplementing the online version as more information becomes available, it will continue to be up to date.
