Overview

Hemp is enjoying a worldwide resurgence. This unique book combines a review of the hemp pest and disease literature published over the past 50 years with up-to-date information on modern biological control techniques. Each pest and disease organism is presented in the same format, covering economic impact, geographical and host-plant range, plant symptoms, taxonomic description, life history, and differential diagnosis. Important cultural, mechanical, biological and chemical controls are highlighted with charts, illustrations and explicit instructions. Easy-to-use keys are included for rapid identification of the most common pests. Introductory chapters describe the general principles of plant protection, requirements for healthy plant growth, and taxonomy of parasites and pathogens.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"Spending several years on this project, McPartland et al have produced a useful and beautiful tome. Their work combines a review of the relevant literature published over the past half century with modern information on biological control techniques (the 22-page bibliography might be worth the cost of the book itself to some). Each pest and diseases organism is presented in similar, encyclopaedia-style format. Entries cover factors like economic impact, geographical and host-plant range, plant symptoms, taxonomic description, life history, and differential diagnosis. Excellent line drawings and photographs (including 86 colour plates) complement the information. As well, introductory chapters describe general principles of plant protection, requirements for healthy plant growth and the taxonomy of parasites and pathogens. ... Thorough, colourful and engrossing, Hemp Diseases and Pests is a hemp publishing event. Recommended."--The Hemp Commerce & Farming Report

Booknews
McPartland (U. of Vermont) and two members of the Amsterdam-based International Hemp Association review research published over the past half century, the earlier works much outdated, and the later scattered in the semi-clandestine grey literature of illicit growers. They begin with the prerequisite information about crop biology relating to principles of plant protection, requirements for growth, and taxonomy and ecology. Then they look at such diseases and pests as insects and mites, fungal diseases, abiotic diseases, and post-harvest problem. Finally they survey cultural and mechanical, biological, and biorational chemical control approaches. They include 86 color plates as well as many black-and-white illustrations. Annotation c.
