Overview

One of the preeminent figures in 20th-century art, Henri Matisse (1869-1954) made countless drawings of enormous appeal, invariably capturing key details of personality, mood and moment in a few deft strokes. This collection of Matisse portrait and still-life drawings is an especially fascinating one in that the artist has chosen to render each of his subjects in a dazzling series of variations.

There are seventeen subjects, or "themes," among them a young woman's face, a vase of flowers and a woman reclining. Each theme has a number of variations, some only six, others as many as eighteen or nineteen. Each is a distinctive work expressing a new thought about the original subject. There are 162 drawings in all: spare, elegant, seldom-seen treasures sure to delight admirers of Matisse, students of drawing and everyone interested in the art of the 20th century.
