Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The adventures never seem to end for redheaded Henry and his big dog Mudge. In this fourteenth story Henry wakes up on his birthday May First to Dad taking pictures, his favorite breakfast of pancakes with strawberries and a wonderful party with sack races, a donkey piñata and a cake shaped like a fish tank. Happy wonderful day for all involved.
Hazel Rochman
It's Henry's birthday in the latest joyful, very simple chapter book about Henry and his huge dog, Mudge. The brief text and large, bright watercolor illustrations show Henry waking up with his pet, enjoying gifts and cake at his party with his parents and his friends, and swinging at a pinata to crack it wide open. The pleasure is in the details, which will lure beginning readers and also make a happy read-aloud" for younger kids.

My sons (ages 4 and 7), love Henry and Mudge stories! A beautiful story about a boy and his big, floppy, drooling dog and their adventrues together. Well written. The author has a talent for seeing the world through the simple eyes of a child. Adorable and heartwarming!

As a retired first and second grade teacher for many years, I used Henry and Mudge books almost on a daily basis for many reasons. The kids absolutely adored Mudge because of his size (and drool) and they loved the relationship between Henry and Mudge (it reminded them of their various pet relationships). Cynthia Rylant created such kind, considerate, and respectful family members and friends and the kids saw this. As a result, there was even more kindness, consideration, and respect displayedin the classroom. When problems did occur in the classroom, the kids would often bring up situations from previous H/M books that we'd read and we'd discuss how they could be solved. The kids were so excited to be reading "chapter" books that they were anxious to try reading other more difficult and challenging "chapter" books. I now have a three-year old granddaughter and, you guessed it, who just loves H/M books. When we celebrated her birthday last summer, she began her special day with pancakes (just like Henry and she told me, too!) She has many of the H/M books and she loves them so much that choosing is always a dilemma. With all the violence the children experience every day, it's nice to see the gentleness, kindness, and respect that can be shown through this wonderful series. This series is an excellent example for all of us.
