Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sharon Salluzzo
Henry had never met his cousin Annie who was coming for an overnight stay. He brushed his beloved dog, Mudge, and hoped that Annie would be fun. His first impression left him feeling anxious, however, because Annie arrived attired in a frilly dress and indicated she did not want Mudge drooling on her. Later, Henry knew he had done the wrong thing when he offered her fudge cookies from a dust covered paper bag he kept under his bed. Nevertheless, he kept trying to be friendly, and Annie did too. At last, they decided to play Frisbee. Henry showed Annie how to throw the Frisbee, and she was a natural. She began to overlook the dog drool on the Frisbee and even requested the fudge cookies from under the bed. When Annie left the next day, she and Henry looked forward to their next visit. The warm cozy feeling that pervades the "Henry and Mudge books" continues here. Beginning readers will learn the importance of patience in developing a new friendship. Stevenson's watercolor illustrations are expressive and provide clues to the text. 1997 (orig.

Kr-Gr 3-A realistic portrayal of life with a BIG, drooling dog and a happy-go-lucky kid who keeps cookies under his bed and lets his fish tank get a little smelly. However, this reality is almost too much for dressed up and proper Cousin Annie-until she discovers her natural talent for playing Frisbee. For the 13th time, Rylant and Stevenson have combined their talents for an on-target, simple story of the everyday adventures of a boy and his dog. Their humor and charming characters are appealing to both beginning readers and adults, making it a tossup as to who will love Henry and Mudge more. Sure to be as popular as its predecessors.-Gale W.
