The latest chapter in this author's Henry and Mudge series is a winner. In this Ready-to-Read Level 2 book, the dynamic duo buy a spy kit and have a great time looking for clues in the neighborhood. Henry wears spyglasses and Mudge dons a spy hat as they venture out in search of intrigue. "Try not to look like you're spying," Henry urges Mudge, and the faithful dog complies when he rolls around in a puddle and chews on a rock. The special relationship between boy and dog shines through in this sweet, laugh-out-loud story. The upbeat illustrations fit the text like a hand and its glove. Henry and Mudge are endearing and lovable characters. What a wonderful way to get children hooked on reading!

While spying around the neighborhood, they discover a paper with a coded message near some trash cans. Henry takes it home, thinks about it for a bit, decodes it, and then sends a return message. After several exchanges, Henry and Mudge meet the other spy who also has a dog in disguise. Calling themselves "Crackers" for being good at cracking codes, the boys form a club and carry real crackers in their pockets for ID. Rylant tells the story in a concise format while maintaining a sense of humor and flow of words. Cynthia Rylant is the author of more than 100 books for young people, including the beloved Henry and Mudge, Annie and Snowball, and Mr. Putter & Tabby series. Her novel Missing May received the Newbery Medal. She lives in Lake Oswego, Oregon.

SuÇie Stevenson is the acclaimed author and illustrator of more than fifty books for children, and is best known as the illustrator of the popular Henry and Mudge books by Cynthia Rylant. She lives on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, with her little cocker spaniel, Gracie.

    cute! Highly recommended!

    My sons (ages 4 and 7), love Henry and Mudge stories! A beautiful story about a boy and his big, floppy, drooling dog and their adventrues together. Well written. The author has a talent for seeing the world through the simple eyes of a child. Adorable and heartwarming!

    Spies and Crackers

    This is a great book if you like spies. The main characters are Henry and Mudge. Henry has a neat spy kit; it has a magnifying glass and glasses and a flashlight. The illustrations are really animated, and the colors are bright.
