Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
Dad asks Henry to help with fixing dinner. They are having tacos. Henry's favorite. He washes and dries his hands before watching Dad shred the cheese. He helps with the table by placing napkins at three places already set with a plate, a knife and a fork. He puts his sippy cup of milk by his place and notes the glasses filled with juice for his parents. Dad asks him to rip the lettuce into small pieces. Then he smooshes the avocado. The family gathers at the table to eat. A baby appears in a high chair between Henry and his mother. This will be a bit disconcerting to those who have not read other Henry books, as no younger member of the family was mentioned earlier and no place had been set for one at the table. Colorful illustrations cover the pages with happy images depicting a loving home. The back cover of the book features five pointers for parents with suggestions for involving toddlers in assisting around the house. Part of the "Henry Helps" series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
Children's Literature - Lorraine Donohue Bonzelet
It is dinnertime and Henry is back in action. Henry and his dad are preparing meatless tacos. Henry, dressed in his camouflage shorts and a comical shirt, is relaxing in his bedroom when dad asks for help with dinner. Henry washes his hands. He rips up the lettuce, mixes the avocado, and watches dad shred the cheese. Henry carries the cheese bowl to the table. He sets the table. The entire family, including the dog, enjoy dinner together. The brightly colored illustrations show dad decked out in his blue and white striped apron. The illustrations can be used to discuss colors, shapes, and counting or they can lead to more in-depth conversations. How many napkins did Henry put on the table? Why did he place three plates and napkins when there are four people? Why are there only two cups of juice on the table? Careful examination of the illustrations can assist with these answers or it can be up to the imagination of the child. The back cover of the book features pointers for parents about assigning tasks to children. This is another wonderful book in the "Henry Helps" series. Reviewer: Lorraine Donohue Bonzelet
