Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Valerie L. Ng, PhD MD(Alameda County Medical Center/Highland Hospital)
Description: This is the latest edition of a respected comprehensive textbook of laboratory medicine. The previous edition was published in 2007.
Purpose: The editors say it best: the purpose of this book is to provide "grounding in the practice of modern laboratory medicine" and a "clear and useful account of laboratory tests that generate the solid scientific information upon which medical decisions are made."
Audience: It is intended to "remain the authoritative source of information for residents, students, and other trainees in the discipline of clinical pathology and laboratory medicine, and for physicians and laboratory practitioners." In other words, anyone involved in patient care.
Features: There is a reason why this book remains one of the fundamental textbooks of laboratory medicine — it is comprehensive, simply superb, and virtually unmatched in scope and thoroughness. This edition continues this longstanding tradition of excellence. And just when you thought there was no way to improve this book, that this book had reached absolute perfection, the editors have upped the ante and found a way to make it even better. It is, of course, concise and comprehensive — anything you would ever want to know in laboratory medicine is in this book. This edition incorporates more color to create incredibly effective visual aids. Each chapter has a standardized layout: title and content (purple/blue), key points (green), tables (tan/brown), and absolutely gorgeous illustrations. Photomicrographs have almost perfect color reproduction. This edition expands upon two areas first introduced in the previous edition (hemostasis and thrombosis, possibly one of the best references on the laboratory aspects of coagulation, and clinical pathology of cancer) and provides a much-needed (given the rapidity of change) update of the molecular pathology section. Warning — this is a heavy book and the font is really small. But not to worry, all of you with failing vision and weak upper body strength, this book is entirely available as an electronic version on a companion website, and entirely searchable by keyword. WOW! Now this is a major, major advantage that sets this book apart from its competitors. Just think how smart you will look on rounds accompanied only by your smart phone and this book on your "favorites" list.
Assessment: There is a reason why this book is a must-have, and this edition is a definite must-have for anyone interested in laboratory medicine.
