Editorial Reviews

Written mostly by the staff at the Academic Medical Center of Amsterdam, based on their personal experience. A reference for surgeons and gastroenterologists, and a textbook for the medical sub- specialty dealing with tumors of the liver, bile ducts, bladder, and pancreas. Beautifully designed, organized very clearly, and well illustrated with both color and b&w photographs, diagrams, and drawings. A third of the book is devoted to diagnostic methods, where the most important recent advances in the field have taken place. Diagnostic methods covered are ultrasonography, endoultrasonography, CT and MRI scans, ERCP, per-percutaneous transkepatic cholangiography and drainage angiography, radionuclide investigations including monoclonal antibody techniques, radioscintigraphy, and biochemical tumor markers. The bulk of the text describes in detail the full repertoire of treatment, emphasizing surgery, arranged by organ. Chapters also discuss the fundamental anatomy, histology, and pathology of the organs, preoperative considerations, applications of lasers, potential complications and their management, and techniques for palliation in incurable cases.
