Overview

I met Fred first.

Fred: Hot. Enigmatic. Alex’s first friend in her lonely new town. Maybe her first…everything.

I met Adina the following Monday.

Adina: Fred’s twin sister. Cold. Troubled. Trouble.

I kissed him.

She pressed her mouth to my mouth.

People warn Alex to steer clear of the twins, but Alex is drawn to them. She wants to be part of their crazy world…no matter the consequences.

Editorial Reviews

Kirkus Reviews

After her dad's affair with a younger woman, Alex moves with her mom to her dead grandmother's house in small-town Connecticut. There she meets the Bishop twins: Fred, who is a dashingly good-looking charmer, and Adina, who is cold and flippantly standoffish. Alex is both bewildered and intrigued by them. Fred's advances seem more romantic than friendly, and Adina's self-absorbed, distant behavior puts her off. Before she knows it, she's enveloped in their world and trapped between her feelings for Fred and Adina's destructive eating disorder, alcoholism and jealousy.Strasnick's slim second offering packs a lot into its short chapters: divorce, broken friendships, crushes, the lines between love and sex and more. Characterization, scenes, dialogue and setting are seamlessly distilled into so few sharp, image-rich phrases that the novel reads almost as if it were written in verse. Less is definitely more here, and readers are plunged into Alex's physical and emotional world within three to four words. Although the plot moves swiftly, the author's ability to capture Alex's inner world in so few words give the novel depth and balance.Complex and thought-provoking. (Fiction. 14 & up)

School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Alex has recently moved to her late grandmother's house in Connecticut with her depressed, alcohol-soaked mother. Dad has been left behind but not alone; much to Alex's disgust, he has his new girlfriend to keep him company. The teen eschews friendship with several "normal" girls and instead is drawn to the eccentric, isolated Bishop twins: charming Fred and his dominant, anorexic sister, Adina. As Fred and Alex become closer, Adina becomes more and more unpredictable. Alex struggles with her own feelings while navigating the twins' complicated relationship. Strasnick walks a fine line between making characters interesting and making them unlikable, with mixed success. Alex, for example, is consistently mean to the people who are nice to her. On the whole, however, the novel has a fresh, modern feel and Strasnick offers an elegant portrayal of one teen's struggle to come to terms with her family, her friendships, and herself. The book contains frequent references to alcohol; Fred and Adina, who have plenty of money, no mother, and an absentee father, share a casual, almost Mad Men-esque attitude toward drinking (not without consequences).—Eliza Langhans, Hatfield Public Library, MA

    I wouldn't suggest reading it.

The title is very interesting; however the book isn't. By the end of the book you are left wanting more because there is no climax.

    I Also Recommend:

    Intriguing, But Felt Incomplete

I'm not quite sure how I feel about Her and Me and You. I enjoyed the overall storyline and the characters were intriguing, but, by the end, the book still felt incomplete.

After Alex's dad has an affair and breaks her family apart, she moves with her mess of a mother to her deceased grandma's house a few hours away. Without her best friend Evie and her favorite parent, Alex feels isolated and alone.

Strasnick's characterization of a lonely, angry, and understandably frustrated girl are spot on. Alex is easy to relate to off the bat, but I found her to also be quite the pushover, which may or may not have been intended. Alex seems to let people walk all over her and let her down again and again with little to no protest. There are moments where she explodes and all her anger come out, but I wanted to see more of that.

As for the twins with the abnormal relationship, they were.different. I like Fred. He seems like an okay guy and he was developed well, as was Adina, but the hot and cold from both of them grated on me a bit. Their close relationship is viewed as more than a little strange to the outside world and when Alex gets thrown into the middle of it, she understands why.

I really enjoyed the ambiguity of Alex's sexual orientation and her reaction to both of the twins. She's young and not really sure who she is, so it worked really well. Strasnick's writing is also gripping and pulled me in. The chapters are short and the story moves quickly, so it's easy to get caught up in it. I finished the book in about an hour or so, not wanting to put it down. I have to say that I really wasn't satisfied with the ending. Towards the end, things began to escalate and get more and more chaotic and I loved that, but then it just ends. And here I am, left wanting more.

Opening line: I met Fred first. ~ pg. 1

Favorite line(s): Three. Three used to fell right. Me, Mom, Dad - the perfect unit. Now three felt lopsided and odd. Me, Evie, Ben. Me, Adina, Fred. Someone was always, always getting pushed to the side. ~ pg. 123

*This is an ARC and lines, page numbers, etc. are subject to change
