Overview

I mainly wrote this short story for my children. They were young when we lost their mom and my wife of twenty-six years. I just want them to know a little more about her. I especially want them to know just how strong and unselfish she was in life and how strong she remained even as death knocked at our door. Then, I let some friends read this story and they really pushed me to share it.

So if you ask me what this story about, I will tell you –

This short story is based upon a true story. Everyone dies in life, but sometimes it matters how you die. Some die in fear, others face the inevitable and accept their sealed fate. Ruth knew her time had come for her to leave this world. But even as death was knocking at her door, she remained strong, and always put her family first. This is a story based upon her last days on earth, how she chose to die and how she lived.

I just finished editing the first 30 pages. I'm exhausted and need to go to bed, but I couldn't until I finished the story. So, I put my damn red pen down and just read the last 18 pages. I am crying my eyes out. I mean I am balling my eyes out! You nailed it! Your wife would be very proud! I am beyond deeply moved. I'm never going to fall asleep now. Amazing!

Meet the Author

Written by local Key West writer, Joe D Wells, aka Island Joe.
Joe D. Wells, Jr. (aka Island Joe) was born in Arkansas in 1959. His childhood involved a lot of moving, attending perhaps 10 different schools, before graduating high school from Colombia Military Academy.
He worked various jobs, making his stake as a off Wall Street Investment Banker, traveling the world, several times over. His knowledge of Wall Street is self taught
He moved his family to Key West, Florida in the early 90's, then losing his first wife, Elizabeth,, to cancer, he was left to raise three children, which he will tell you is no easy job and perhaps, he could have done better, but he sure could have done a lot worse. Everyone seems fairly normal.
His family started Island Joe's Coffee Roasting Company around 2005, which has gained international fame for their ability to roast fine gourmet coffee and espresso. Then he begin baking, which bakers start early in the morning. Finding he had time between baking pastries and roasting coffee for customers, he begins writing, finding the solitude at the café early the mornings to be very relaxing. He can write without being disturbed, after all Key West is a drinking island, which most occurs at night and Joe D. has be known to enjoy his drink.
