Overview

This 25th anniversary eBook edition of this classic story includes a new introduction by the author and new cover art by Anne Maria Brant!

Matt didn't know the scrap of parchment was a trap. So he read the runes - and found himself on a world where reciting poetry verses worked magic. His first effort got him locked in a dungeon by the evil sorcerer Malingo. Trying for light, he brought forth a fire-breathing, drunken dragon, who told him Princess Alisande, rightful ruler of Merovence, was also held in the dungeon.

Naturally, he had to free her, himself, and the dragon, using poetry lifted from Shakespeare. And because she was young and beautiful, he swore to serve as her wizard. Then he learned that his job as wizard was to fix it so the three of them could overcome all the dark magic and armies of Malingo!

The addition to the party of a lust-witch and a priest who became a werewolf now and then didn't seem much help. Matt figured he had got himself into quite a predicament.

For once, he was right!

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com - A. Wolverton
Two aspects of 'Her Majesty's Wizard' kept me hooked:

1 - The action is practically non-stop. You will have to turn many, many pages from the very beginning to find a place to breathe! Stasheff has given action/adventure fans their money's worth.

2 - The deeper implications of moral and theological thought. Stasheff's writing goes way beyond a casual look at "good vs. evil." He is able to examine, without getting too preachy, what drives his characters to do what they do.

Meet the Author

Christopher Stasheff teacher, thespian, techie, and author of science fiction & fantasy novels. One of the pioneers of "science fantasy," his career spans four decades, 44 novels (including translations into Czech, German, Italian, Russian, and Japanese), 29 short stories, and seven 7 anthologies. His novels are famous for their humor (and bad puns), exploration of comparative political systems, and philosophical undertones.

He has always had difficulty distinguishing fantasy from reality and has tried to compensate by teaching college. When teaching proved too real, he gave it up in favor of writing full time. He tends to pre-script his life, but can't understand why other people never get their lines right. This causes a fair amount of misunderstanding with his wife and four children. He writes novels because it's the only way he can be the director, the designer, and all the actors too.

    Ok, but not a re-reader

I loved this book 15-20 years ago when I first read it as a teenager in love with all things medieval and fantasy. So when I saw it was an inexpensive NOOK book, I felt "why not?" It was okay but not as great as I remembered it. The characters were a bit one dimensional and the story line formulaic.

    Love this book!

When this book came out 25 years ago, I read it over and over till I the scotch tape could not hold the book together any more. Its a great tale about a ordinary grad student who gets swept away to a world where he is extra-ordinary. It has all the standard trappings of a traditional fantasy novel: wizards, sorcerers, damsel in distress, a kingdom at risk, giants, dwarfs and dragons. Two decades ago this was my favorite book of all time, and now that I am re-reading it its destine to become that way again!

Its an easy read with very few words that would give the average person any trouble. There are a few errors that look like a product of the PBOOK to EBOOK conversion, but can not swear they were not in the original as its been two decades since I read this book.

The introduction by the author has a few spoilers in it, nothing serious, but I recommend you leave it for last if you have not already read the book.

    Amazing and Interesting!

The story was amazing... there was so much detail! The author did an amazing job figuring out every aspect of magic, and Matthew Mantrell was perfect! A grad student was probably the best possible person to throw into a medieval world, especially one that knows so much!

    Stasheff has done it again!

I never thought Stasheff could write a story better than his Escape Velocity, but this story sure does come close! As a whole, this series is definately one of the best and humorous I have ever read.

    Pretty good

I thought that this book was good, but not wonderful. It had enough action in it, but when there was no action, like in the everyday parts, it got just a little boring. I liked how the author used stanzas from authors like Shakespear as a basis for the wizardry. Pretty good read.
