Overview

Major Dos Masters deployed on counter drug operations more than he is on base or home in Colorado, prefers his no relationships, no broken hearts lifestyle. Then a mission went horribly wrong. Dos spent months in captivity and more in the hospital after his rescue. He has finally returned home to Colorado for some R&R. His time is spent getting back in shape, fighting attacks from a virus his captors pumped into him, and watching the redhead across the street from his brother's security office. Not that he plans to do more than watch. Between his vow not to marry, and his now questionable life expectancy, a relationship is the last thing he wants or needs.

Copper Kerrigan, ex-Navy nurse turned massage therapist, likes her quiet life in the Colorado Rockies. Living in the house she inherited from her grandparents is a nice change from the horror of Iraq. Coming home to watch her mother's decline from cancer, confirmed her decision to leave nursing. With massage, she is still able to help people heal without all the red tape of hospitals. Her life is full with work and friends. Growing up an Army brat and watching her mother's heartbreak every time her father deployed, she knows love is not for her, especially not with a military man. At least, she did until someone breaks into her place of business and a wounded soldier comes to her rescue.

When Dos receives a call from his commanding officer, who turns out to be the redhead's father, his mission becomes making certain Copper remains safe. His plan is to do it from a distance, but when later that night someone tries to break into her house, Dos finds himself with a very pretty, very tempting houseguest.

Copper wishes she could argue the command that she spend the night at his house, but since he was injured trying to protect her it seems a bit childish. Besides, her father asked her to help with his rehab. A stay at his house for the night will give her a clearer view into the severity of his condition. What she sees instead are shadows of guilt in his eyes. She fears she won't be able to resist the pull of his wounded heart.

Sandra S. Kerns really knows how to write the alpha male, and the heroine who can handle him! Kerns debut novel, Her Master Defender, is filled with spot on depictions of military life and its pros and cons for a family. Dos Masters and his two other brothers Ace and Tres, fill the story with testosterone, and Copper Kerrigan adds the right female touch for Dos to realize his life isn't complete, yet he dare not risk any relationship after his run in with the simply evil Cardone. Twists and turns will keep you reading far into the night. I can't wait for the other two books in the series to come out.

Thr plot was interesting. Characters had depth. Story started dragging, became repetious. Could have cut a hundred pages out and would have held my interest more

I really enjoyed this book. The plot had a good mix of romance and suspense. The writing was good, a few errors here and there but nothing too bad, and the character development was good as well. I felt like the plot was rushed in a few places and character development could have been a little deeper, but i still reccommend it and i am planning on reading more in the series.

The story is engaging and the characters are both complex and likeable. However, the author needs to learn the proper use of commas in participial phrases. I had to stop time and again to understand the meaning of sentences like this: The suffocating hold eased remembering the confident young captain who led the rescue. The hold eased the remembrance? Put the comma where it belongs!

I really enjoyed Dos and Copper's story. So emotional with suspense and hidden passion. Well written and hard to put down. Dos' brothers Ace and Tres make up the other two books of this trilogy. 476 pages

A masterfully entertaining story set in the backdrop of Colorado. At the heart of it is the budding romance between Major Dos Masters and Copper Kerrigan, who are attracted to one another despite their shortcomings and/or debilitations that have arisen from their lives and occupations in and around the U.S. military. The extra bonus is that the plot builds around suspense to do with a military operation gone wrong against a drug cartel. I was impressed by the author’s ability to create her entire story around very few scenes, which allowed the reader to focus on the more important pieces to the story—the emotional rollercoaster of the evolving romance. The beginning of “Her Master Defender” grabbed me, and I didn’t put this book down until I finished it. I felt at ease with the well-developed characters, and I can’t wait to read the next stories in the series that will feature Dos’s two triplet brothers. I highly recommend this story to avid readers of romance who love a little suspense mixed in.
