Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
03/24/2014
This romantic thriller is long on romance, but its thrills—steamy bits included—are short and to the point. United States covert agent Ivy Halliwell, a cat shape-shifter, has a history of bad-news partners, and her initial meeting with Special Forces Capt. Landon Donovan goes particularly poorly. He’s unhappy at being snatched away from his team mid-mission and paired up with a dainty-looking woman. After Ivy levels Landon during their first training match, his respect grows, and so does his lust. When the two run up against an evil mastermind who’s creating shifters, the question is whether the two will prioritize the mission or each other. Credulity is thin on the ground, but a solid story, vivid action scenes, and worthy characters carry the day. (May)

Prologue

Grozny, Chechen Republic

Ivy Halliwell studied the dilapidated warehouses across the street, her eyes narrowing in the darkness. Casualties of a decades-long war, the buildings were mere burned-out husks of their former glory. Not to mention the perfect setting for an ambush. She scanned the broken windows and overgrown landscape. There wasn't anyone in sight, but that didn't mean someone wasn't hiding somewhere. She sniffed the air, trying to pick up a scent, but all she could smell was the sickening exhaust from the crappy rental car's idling engine.

She glanced at her partner. "I know you don't care what I think, but something's off about this."

Dave snorted. "Why? Because your Spidey senses are tingling again?"

Her feline intuition-the one that told her danger was lurking in those warehouses-wasn't one of her recognized skills, so Dave didn't put much stock in it. No, check that. Dave didn't put much stock in her, period. He didn't like working with her kind.

God, she was so sick of his attitude.

"I'm not asking you to trust my instincts because I know you won't. Going in there without checking the place out first is beyond stupid. It's dangerous."

He pulled into an alley between two abandoned buildings, put the small car in park, and opened the door. "That's your professional opinion, based on years of field experience, right?"

She got out and followed him to the back of the car. "It's a good idea to be a little cautious on this one, okay?"

Dave checked the magazine in his .40-caliber automatic, then shoved the weapon back in its holster. "If I want an opinion on what kind of cat food to buy for my ex-wife's tabby, I'll ask a freak like you. Until then, do us both a favor and keep your mouth shut."

Ivy clenched her jaw to keep from growling. Literally. She was so close to losing her cool and ripping her partner a new one. But a rat-infested street in the middle of a dangerous crime-ridden, war-torn country wasn't the place to do it, no matter how much Dave might be asking for it. When they got stateside, though, she was done with this sham of a partnership. She was going to her boss and requesting a new partner because this one sure as hell wasn't working out. Teaming her up with a chauvinistic former jarhead like Dave Graner had been a disaster from the start.

But first, they had to make it out of Grozny alive. A couple hours ago, that didn't seem like it was going to be a problem. Now, Ivy wasn't so sure. Something was not right about this op.

Dave opened the trunk and grabbed a pair of night vision goggles-NVGs-as well as a communication headset. "Stay with the car."

"Don't be ridiculous. I'm coming with you."

He gave her a hard look as he hooked the headset over his ear and adjusted the mic. "Stay here. That's an order."

Damn him! She was his partner, not his subordinate.

She stood and watched Dave jog toward the warehouses, then grabbed the other communication headset, hooked it over her ear, and turned it on.

"Dave, the plan was to watch the guy from a distance, then pick up the bag after he makes the drop."

She heard him swear under his breath. "If the Russian can change the plan, so can I."

Typical Dave. Always trying to prove he was in charge. "Let me at least come in and cover you."

"Stay with the damn car like I told you to."

Ivy bit her tongue. The moron was going to get himself killed. She shouldn't care what happened to him, but she didn't want him getting hurt. And every instinct told her that would happen if she didn't stop him from going in those warehouses alone.

How the hell was she supposed to do that?

"Dave, please-"

"Dammit, just shut the hell up. I'm too busy right now to listen to your shit. I have eyes on our guy and the package. I'm moving toward the drop point now."

Crap.

Ivy's stomach twisted in the same gut-wrenching knot it always did when she attempted to ignore her body's internal alarm system. The hell with standing around. Let Dave report her for insubordination when they got back to DC if he wanted to. She wasn't going to be the one to let that jerk get killed. Pulling the 9mm from the holster on her hip, she ran toward the dilapidated warehouses.

The place was a pitch-black maze with twists and turns and dead ends left behind from when the building had collapsed at some point in the past. The darkness wasn't a problem for Ivy. Her eyesight automatically adjusted to the lack of light. Within seconds, the dark corners and shadows disappeared as if someone had flicked on a lamp, except without all the distortion and depth-perception problems that came with night vision goggles. Maybe part of the reason Dave disliked her so much was because she never needed NVGs. He hated the damn things.

She didn't use her heightened night vision to track Dave, though. She used his scent. It was strong on the air, too. Adrenaline mixed with fear did that.

"I'll be at your location in less than thirty seconds. Don't do anything stupid until I get there."

"Do me a favor. Go. Fuck. Yourself," he ground out. The radio clicked off.

"Dammit!" Ivy let out a growl and ran faster.

In front of her, she heard the pop, pop, pop of a small-caliber gun.

"Dave!" she shouted into her headset. "Dave, answer me!"

No reply.

Buildings blurred as she ran past them. She should slow down, check corners and alleys. She could be running right into an ambush.

But she didn't slow. She couldn't.

The scent of blood hit her hard as she rounded the corner of a large stone building, and she immediately froze. Less than ten feet away, Dave and another man-probably the Russian-were lying on the ground, bleeding from gunshot wounds.

She started toward them but stopped when she caught movement out of the corner of her eye. Three men-she could tell they were men from their scent-were nonchalantly walking away from the bodies. One of them had a briefcase in his hand. Another held Dave's NVGs. She darted after them, 9mm aimed and ready to fire, but all three of them spun around at the same time and raised their weapons.

There was nowhere to take cover, and Ivy was moving too fast to even try. Instead, she opted for surprise, leaping into the air as she swiftly closed the distance between her and the men. Their eyes widened as she went airborne. Their first salvo of rounds passed harmlessly underneath her, and while she was still in the air, she took out the most dangerous target first-the guy with the MP5 submachine gun. Two shots to the chest silenced his weapon and dropped him where he stood, leaving her free to turn her gun on a second target-the man with the .45. She put two rounds in him and he flew backward.

Taking out those men left her exposed to the last shooter-the one with the small-caliber pistol. He didn't waste any time firing at her. She hit the ground and rolled, bullets zipping past her head.

The man redirected his aim to shoot her in the head. She knocked the pistol out of his grip with her free hand and leveled her gun at him. Before she could shoot, the bastard caught her weapon hand in both of his, trying to wrestle the pistol away from her.

Ivy set the animal inside free, letting out the growl that had been building low in her throat ever since she found her partner lying on the floor in a pool of blood. She didn't know for sure if this was the bastard who had shot Dave, and right now, she didn't care.

Releasing her hold on the gun, she let her fingernails extend until they became long, sharp, curved claws. The man stared at her, his eyes wide. With a hiss, she darted her right hand up and sliced open his throat.

He hit the floor, the gun falling from his useless hands.

Ivy rose from her crouch, her breathing ragged. All told, the fight had lasted less than fifteen seconds. If things had gone the way they were supposed to, she and Dave would have been in and out in that same amount of time.

Taking a deep breath, she retracted her claws, then turned and ran to Dave's side.

She carefully rolled him onto his back. He'd been shot multiple times in the chest, then another in the head. He'd never even gotten his gun out of his holster. Whatever first aid she could have offered was too late.

She sighed. "Dammit, Dave. Why didn't you just listen to me?"

She gently closed Dave's eyes, then got to her feet to check on the Russian. He was dead, too, shot once in the head.

Ivy's gaze went to Dave again and against her will, she found herself reliving the last few moments of her partner's life. Could she have done something to prevent his death?

She shook her head. Now wasn't the time-and this definitely wasn't the place-to have this conversation with herself. Even in a blown out shithole like this one, someone was bound to come snooping around to see what all the shooting had been about. In her experience, people who snooped around shootouts were not the kind of people she wanted to deal with.

She walked over to the second man she'd shot and ripped open the briefcase still clutched in his hand. Grabbing the manila folder inside, she shoved it in her coat pocket, then took out her iPhone and snapped pictures of all three gunmen as well as Dave and the Russian. She wanted to have something to back up her story if there was an investigation.

When she was done, she retrieved her 9mm, then grabbed Dave's NVGs. She didn't intend to leave anything behind that might identify them. That included Dave. Bending down, she slid her arms under his body, then lifted.

"Come on, Dave. Let's get you home."

Dave was more than twice her weight and she grunted with the effort as she hooked one of his arms over her shoulder and dragged him to the car. It was slow going, but she didn't care. Crappy partner or not, she wasn't going to leave him behind.

This is going to be a damn good series based on this first book.

This is going to be a damn good series based on this first book. I like the fact that this is a super secret group using shifters and humans together. I even liked that they weren't what you normally think of as shifters. It's gonna be a really exciting series to read and see where it goes. There was plenty of action to keep things interesting without it being to much and of course the level of sexual tension that radiated off Landon and Ivy was enough to set the book on fire. So, why didn't I give it five stars? Well, one reason was the handler's name kept changing from John to Todd and back again and that got annoying. The other reason was I didn't understand why if John was in charge of everybody and everything he took orders from Dick, who was under him in the chain of command. Anyway, looking forward to more in this series.

Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

Paige Tyler has outdone herself with this riveting tale of extra

Paige Tyler has outdone herself with this riveting tale of extraordinary characters!
Her Perfect Mate is a book that once you finish reading it, you ask yourself..."Now what does one read after a book like this?". I find myself mystified when trying to come up with a review that will give this book it's due, a review that will maybe give it the grand justice that it deserves. With that said, let me try to put into words what a most superlative read this book is!
When I read a book that has captivated my attention in the most profound way, I don't like to give detailed description of the book. You can get that from the excerpt and/or synopsis that the author releases. However, I will give you a small glimpse into what is in store for your reading pleasure. This book will take you on a journey that will bewitch your full attention and keep you enchanted with it's twists, turns and plots of suspense.
Landon Donovan is in a class of heroes that you find, are few and far between. The devotion he shows in this book for his teammates, partner and job are first-rate. His loyalty is nothing short of miraculous. But this is nothing compared to what he feels for Ivy.
Ivy Halliwell is divine and to say she is like no other is an understatement. However, she questions herself when she is confronted day after day with disgruntled colleagues that see her, as less than human. Can she get over self doubt when she is partnered with Landon!?

Thank you Ms. Paige Tyler for allowing me the honor and extreme pleasure of reading this magnificent story. You continue to amaze me with your wit!

This story was compelling and gripping from page one. It started off so action packed I was afraid the author would have no where else to go and boy was I wrong. Ivy was a kick ass heroine who looked good while doing it and Landon was a hero that every woman dreams about. This author was new to me and I am so glad that I got a chance to read this explosive book and can't sit to see what next in this spectacular line-up of secondary characters. Thank you Paige you knocked it out of the park with this book.

Romantic suspense with a paranormal twist.  This is the first in an exciting new series.  Action, adventure and romance.  I liked everything about this book but the title.  It is a little misleading. The characters were compelling and the story kept you turning the page to see what happens next.  This is an incredibly fast paced story and I couldn’t put it down.  I look forward to the next installment.

NUMBER OF HEARTS: 4 1/2 REVIEW:  To say Ivy is a little gun shy

    NUMBER OF HEARTS: 4 1/2
    REVIEW:
To say Ivy is a little gun shy when it comes to her newest partner is an understatement. Ivy has not had the best track record with her partners. But there is something about Landon something that puts her at ease. But even that makes her a bit nervous.

Landon is not very happy to be pulled off of his mission and forced to come back stateside. That is until he learns who is new partner is and what she can do.

Landon & Ivy make such a great team. From the save on the rope cross I knew this was going to be a great story. The interaction between these two was so much fun.

This is my first Paige Tyler book and I am totally in love with the world that she created. These are not your ordinary shifters! Oh no this shifters. Should I tell you? I am not sure. You will just have to pick up a copy of Her Perfect Mate and find out for yourself.

When Special Forces Captain Landon Donovan is picked for an assi

When Special Forces Captain Landon Donovan is picked for an assignment with the Department of Covert Affairs, he’s stunned to find his new partner is a beautiful woman who looks like she couldn’t hurt a fly, much less take down a terrorist.

Ivy Halliwell isn’t your average covert op. Her feline DNA means she can literally bring out the claws when things get dicey. She isn’t thrilled to be paired with yet another military grunt, but Landon is different. He doesn’t think she’s a freak and he’s smokin’ hot.

Soon they find themselves facing a threat even greater than anyone imagines...and an animal magnetism impossible to ignore.

    Review:

What an exciting new book in this brand new series!

I have read Ms. Tyler's work before and thoroughly enjoyed it, but this has to be my new favorite of her works.

In my opinion, she has blended the paranormal with the contemporary.  The basis of the story is that the Department of Homeland Security is the parent of this super secret, covert operation labeled the DCO.  In this secret division human agents are paired with shifters to go on covert operations.  Ivy is a cat shifter, now the shifters don't actually turn into an animal but tap into parts of the animal that is part of their DNA.  I like Ivy she is strong, but is also vulnerable.  She and the other shifters are not liked by some of their co-workers.  Plus, Ivy has had two bad pairings, but one of her bosses Kendra has come up with a "compatibility" program and it selects Landon as her "Perfect Partner", or mate as the case may be.  Landon is a Special Forces Captain who is pulled from the field to work with Ivy.  Landon is a perfect for her and Wow is he yummy!  They immediately hit it off and become a great working team, that trusts each other.  The mission they are sent out on tests their budding relationship both on and off  missions.  My only caveat is that it was pretty easy for me to figure out what the bad guys were up to.

I really enjoyed this book, it was well written, full of characters who were both convincingly good and bad and at the heart of it two main characters who are super sexy and rockin' action heroes.  I finished this book in one setting and now I have to wait to read more...ugh

Thrilling, romantic, and enjoyable, Her Perfect Mate was a wonde

Thrilling, romantic, and enjoyable, Her Perfect Mate was a wonderful paranormal romance. I really enjoyed reading this book. It was a lovely read.

Ivy was a great heroine. She was very strong and a force to be reckoned with. She could fight like hell and refused to take crap from anyone, about being a shifter or being a woman in a Special Ops team. But, she was also nice, likable, and loyal to those she cared about. I thought she was lovely.

Landon was also wonderful. He was very sweet and definitely strong. I liked that he was never judgmental and didn't let anyone try make him. He was great and I really liked him.

The romance was lovely. Ivy and Landon were a perfect match. They were both incredibly strong and clever and they made an unstoppable team. They chemistry between them was constantly sizzling and it got very hot. These two were a wonderful couple.

The plot was well paced. I wasn't totally hooked, which was my one problem with the book. I wasn't completely absorbed in the story. However, I was still kept interested the entire way through. There were plenty of thrills as Ivy and Landon went on extremely dangerous missions. I enjoyed the story and the ending was great, tying up the romance, while leaving me curious about what will happen with the villains in book 2.

Her Perfect Mate was a wonderful paranormal romance. I liked this book and I really enjoyed reading it. From the romance, to the countless thrills, this was a lovely read. Romance lovers, this is a book worth checking out.

    Way Outside My Norm

Had no idea what a "shifter" was and do not usually read books about special forces etc. But that said I found this book well written with a strong story line and I finished it quickly... Not sure if I will be seeking similar books in the future but I will not say "definitely NO"..

    This was Ok...

I found the end a little too unbelievable... I am all for a hero, but just did not like the "damsel in distress' thing at the end.

    ~ 2.5 Her Perfect Mate Stars ~

Her Perfect Mate is book one in the X-Ops series by Paige Tyler. This is my first experience with this author.

I enjoyed reading Her Perfect Mate, it was interesting, the shifters are a little different then what I'm use to reading, but I was not overly impressed. So much ended up bothering me in this book. I felt like I might not finish it, but I kept going wanting to see what everyone else saw

To start: I had a hard time liking the Department of Covert Affairs. It came off as corrupt, prejudiced, and deceitful. Even the people working in the organization, both shifters and humans, with the exception of a slit few, where prejudiced or distrustful of each other. The characters I’m not even sure about. Our heroine who is supposed to be a top agent came access week, insecure, and whinny at times. I could not understand or connect to her. She also can’t control herself. (Really?) Any good shifter has control especially if they are a top agent. I wanted a kick ass agent and she was not that. As for our hero, Ya he is described as god-like, sexy, and can do no wrong. He has too much going for him. Gorgeous, loyal, polite, good in bed, tough, etc. Where is his flaw?…Everyone has at least one flaw. I never once felt like Landon and Ivy where partners as agents or in their personal life. Our hero made all the decisions and our heroine needed him to keep her self worth and job. Also where was the world building? I felt in the dark most of the time and was trying to peace things together about the shifters, agency, characters, etc. We have no indication that shifters are super secret, yes it's mentioned, but Ivy’s sister is living a normal life and others have normal jobs, but its noted that no one knows about them. I needed more

Her Perfect Mate was an ok read. I plan to try out book two in the X-Ops series to see if it gets better. If the blurb interests you, I urge you to give it a shot. Just because it did not work for me does not mean it won’t for you.

Her Perfect Mate is the first in this new series. When I first

Her Perfect Mate is the first in this new series. When I first heard about Paige Tyler and her book “Her Perfect Mate”, it was at a Facebook event. I kept reading her snippets and just had to 1-click her book. This book is amazing!

Captain Landon Donovan, Special Forces, was pulled from an assignment in Afghanistan. He was hand-picked by the Department of Covert Operations, aka DCO. DCO has chosen Landon for a secret division that no one has heard of. His new job is to stop Terrorists from kidnapping brilliant biologists and to protect his partner from being captured at all cost, including exterminating her if captured.

Ivy Halliwell has had many military partners that under estimate her and her ability to complete any job. When Landon set his eyes on her, he thought her to be sexy and harmless. Harmless Ivy is not; she is something Landon could never believe unless he saw it with his own eyes. Ivy is a gorgeous feline shifter and way more dangerous then what most men would think her to be.

Ivy hated that they’d partnered her up with another “combat killer”. She had dealt with being humiliated by her previous two partners. She was ready for anything, except for the instant attraction for her new sexy-as-all-get-out partner. When Landon walked into the training room and was told Ivy was his partner he was wondering, WTH! There introduction was to fight each other so he can see she was no delicate flower, he soon realized not only was she beautiful, but she is Lara Croft awesome.

Landon and Ivy started training and their team work was as if they had always been partners. At the rope course when Ivy got into trouble, Landon was right there saving her and not even thinking about what could have happened to him.

So when they go on their first assignment, they find themselves in some trouble. Ivy has never had trust from her partners, so when Landon shows her he is different, she starts to struggle with her attraction. Rules are rules, no relationships with partners outside of work. Some humans and shifters think they should not mix. So Ivy and Landon have to deal with fellow operatives and jealousy.

When the two of them find themselves in trouble, Landon has to call on the people he trusts the most with Ivy’s life. Landon calls his old special-ops team, Ivy’s friends Kendra and her jealous shifter friend, Clayne Buchanan. Can they work together and save Ivy or will they fight? You’ll have to read to find out!

This book has action and good loving. I enjoyed the lessons of both human and shifters, learning to work together and get along as a team. I wish Landon’s Special Forces team had just a little bit more page time, but that’s what makes you want to read the next book in the series. Even though Ivy is a bad ass shifter, she still has insecurities. At times it was a little much, but come on, we all have off days.

Her Perfect Mate is the first in a new series by Paige Tyler. The good guys work for the Department of Covert Affairs,
but with a twist. At least one member of the team is a shifter, but not just an ordinary shifter. These shifters may have
animal DNA, they do not fully shift into whatever animal they are. They just take on the traits such as strength and
heightened senses. The other half of the team is fully human. Ivy is an EVA, an extremely valuable asset. Landon is a
captain in the Special Forces. He is pulled off a dangerous mission to be paired with Ivy. Neither is happy to be put
    together.

The world building doesn’t take much, just the explanation of the shifter into the world, but only a select few have that
knowledge. Once Landon has moved into the DCO and paired with Ivy, it’s not hard to see the chemistry flying
between them as they do the will they/won’t they get together. Ivy has been hurt in the past, and leery of getting
    involved with her partner.

When faced with the next case, neither expects it to be a life and death situation.  Once it is discovered exactly what
is going on, Landon and Ivy must race against time to save the day. Add in Landon’s former teammates and Ivy’s
friends from the DCO, the world is saved until the next crisis arises.

I loved this first installment in the X-Ops series, and looking forward to many more in this series from Paige Tyler.

Riveting, Action packed, Sexy scenes and chemistry between two characters that will have you needing ice water to cool down!  This book was fantastic!  Landon is everything you want in a military hero hot, strong, not afraid to show he has a softer side and did I say hot?

Ivy is one extremely kick ass heroine and I am all about kick ass.  I am not a fan of the type that whine and can't do anything for themselves.  Well she is sexy and she is can hold her own.  These two make an explosive pair!

Ivy hasn't had the best of partners so she is a little skeptical on why Landon is so nonchalant about what she is telling him and what he sees.  Landon, well, he just wants to know why he was taken out in the middle of his mission and wants to know now.  When these two have their first training session it is quite obvious that the chemistry is only going to get hotter and they make a excellent pair.  And Landon wants to know exactly where these claw marks came from!   WHAT!?

You'll have to read the book to find out, no spoilers here!!!

    I gave this book 4 1/2 HOOTS!!!
