Read an Excerpt

Though it was pitch-black, Nat's eyesight was sharp and well-adjusted. He knew every inch of ground, every stone, fence, and broken-down piece of machinery on his land. Picking out shades of gray, he moved towards the car. Flicked off the rifle's safety and peered in through the frosted-up glass. It was like trying to see to the bottom of a riverbed in the middle of winter. He couldn't make out a damned thing.

With one finger, he lifted the handle of the driver's side door. It clicked open, but no interior light came on. Nat took a step back and peered inside, made out a bundled up figure in the back seat, curled up, unmoving.

Gripping his rifle he felt the tension crackle like static on a dry day. The fine hairs at his nape sprang up, tensile and erect.

"Drop the rifle, mister." The voice was softly feminine.

"Now why would I want to do that?" he asked.

She was silent. He could feel her apprehension; almost see her weighing her choices in the concealment of the Jeep.

His teeth locked together. "I don't think so, ma'am." He might have been raised to be polite to women, but he wasn't dumb. "Not 'til you tell me why the hell you're sneaking onto my property in the middle of the night."

She shifted slightly. He heard the rustle as she pushed aside the blankets.

"What's your name?" she asked. There was a lilt, some sort of accent in her voice that sounded both warm and aggressive at the same time. It undid some of his irritation and sparked a glimmer of curiosity.

"Well, ma'am." Pitched low, Nat's voice was steely with courteousness. "A better question would be what the hell's yours?"

Multiple character driven suspense that ends up with each on a path that
     intersects to a deadly showdown.

Elizabeth Ward’s FBI undercover op went wrong in so many ways and now
she on the run from the Mob. She ends up on a ranch in Montana in hopes
of hiding out. Elizabeth had a tragic childhood and combine that with what
went down on the FUBAR op, she a little broken inside. But beneath all the
pain is a woman that can kick butt and take names. The last thing she needs
is to be attracted to the sexy rancher Nat when she knows her life expectancy
    isn’t looking to good.

Nat Sullivan is on the verge of losing his family’s ranch. His mom’s health is
not good, his widower brother is grieving with booze and women leaving the
raising of his young daughter to Nat and there sister. Along with the huge
responsibilities of the ranch and his family, he’s also still bitter about a
relationship and not very trusting of women. When Elizabeth shows up to
rent one of his cabins he instantly knows this woman is running from trouble
and wants no part of it. But it’s not too long before he realizes she has
awakened something in him he thought was long dead, getting through
to a woman holding her secrets pretty close to the vest isn’t easy.

The story bounces between the ranch, the Mob bad guy and Elizabeth’s
FBI boss Marshall Hayes who’s trying to find her before the Mob does.
The author did a great job with the three separate stories going on that
eventually intersect at the end. There is a story arc started in this book
between Marsh and Elizabeth’s best friend Josephine that’s going to be
continued in their book Her Last Chance which comes out in December.
I really liked Elizabeth and Nat’s story but I have to say that I cannot wait
to read more about Marsh and Josephine.

    Excellent!

I hardly ever write reviews but i had to for this as well as the next book in this series. What an excellent writer! For real! I loved her style and flow of writing. Superb characters. Edgy, gripping suspense. Romance that was amazing. Sex but not over the top, leaves some for the imagination which really is the idea of writing. The story comes alive in your mind. Loved it, hope she keeps writing for a long time, she has a new reader!

A great start to a new series

This is a well written tale of intrique, and enough romance to enjoy. The characters are well defined with the beautiful scenery of New York to Big Sky country in Montana. Highly recommend looking forward to the next book.

Running! Always running from a killer. Spoilers included! I warned you!

Running! Always running from a killer. Elizabeth Ward, a former F.B.I. agent. Running, because of her past. What happened? Elizabeth Ward is running from the one person she never wants to see again! She ends up on a ranch, somewhere in Montana, in a little town called Stone Creek. She meets a son of the owner (the owner is in the hospital at the time) and right away, there's something between them. They both think it's one sided, until the son's farmhand, Caleb, gets into a fight. Nat, the son, keeps an eye out on Eliza. He goes into the room, where she pulls out a gun, because she was scared. "You sleep with a GUN under your pillow?!" Nat exclaims. Then, he knows shes scared of something, and it slips out that she has been raped! Nat wants to hunt the person down, but the person os hunting her down to kill her. She finally confides in Nat, after his mother dies, and she prepares to leave. Nat doesnt want her to leave, because he is just now realizing how much he had come to care for her. The killer finds Eliza, and has offered to let her friend go, if she's willing to be raped once more, then killed. Little does he know, Eliza hired an assassion. As he pulls his trigger, he gets shot in the head. She becomes unconscience. She is rushed to the hosital, where Nat has been 4 too many times! Nat puts Marry Me somewhere, upside down where she can read it. She screams "YES!" so the nurses think she's hurt, and push Nat out of the room. I would recommend this book for ages mature+ (18+). Contents include: adult content, killing, and the occasional wolf. Not to mention bears. Hopefully adults understand what I mean by "adult content" for the kids who choose to read the reviews, even if you shouldn't!!! My younger sister always did that as we were growing up. Read the reviews, then read the book...

I got tricked into reading this book.

I was drawn in with the murder, spy, intrique, strong female character descriptions of the book. Truly disappointing that the story line and writing style was so much more adolescent.

Just a step up from Harlequin Romances. I would say this is at least PG 13. Maybe ... label it soft porn for the semi graphic sex scenes.

The "who done it aspect" of the story was bogus.

    Mostly enjoyable

    ## Mostly enjoyable. The second half of the book was tremendous. As for the first half, lot of decriptions of the land and weather filled too many pages. We get it, Montana is beautiful and cold. Really, really cold. No reason to hit us over the head with it. Mostly though, I had trouble with the heroine during the first half of the book as well. She was always falling, stumbling, stammering. Seems like she was so incredibly inept. She's an undercover FBI agent for Pete's sake. She should be a lot more capable even if she had been assaulted. I almost stopped reading because she annoyed me THAT much, but finally about half way through she became more competent. Also, I didn't like the constant comparrison to the ex-girlfriend Nina. I probably will read again but will skim through some parts to move it along faster.
