Her Summer with the Marine by Susan Meier

Their competition has never been so irresistible

The last person Ellie McDermott wanted to run into after returning to her hometown is Finn Donovan, her high school nemesis and the guy she crossed the line from enemies to lovers with one night years ago. Now ex-military, tattooed, and still sexy as hell, Finn is a complication Ellie doesn’t need—she needs to concentrate on saving her family business.

Finn’s entire life, Ellie was there, going head-to-head with him in every class, bee, and test. So it’s no surprise she’d show up just as he was about to take over her father's struggling business. It is a surprise, though, that his attraction to her is even more explosive than it had been. Acting on their attraction is one thing, but Finn has to turn a profit to save his own family, and nothing—not even love—will get in his way.

    Never Disappointed

I have been a fan of Susan Meier for quite some time. Susan's writing style is clear. Her characters are always interesting and different. Susan has unique plots.

In this book Susan's human was able to shine. She is a funny lady.
I find her books a steady pace. I get lost in Susan's books and don't stop reading until the end. Then she leaves me wanting more.

Thanks for another great read Susan!

Her Summer with the Marine is a fun, sexy frenemies to lovers story. Ellie McDermott has to move home and take over the family funeral parlor because of her dad’s worsening Alzheimer’s. Finn Donovan, the guy she competed with all through school, and who she had one night with, has also returned to town and opened a funeral parlor.

And there isn’t enough business in this small town for both of them.

This story is so sweet and fun, I can’t even tell you. I LOVED the tension from the fact that both characters had a NEED for their business to succeed. And you want both of them to succeed, even though it’s not possible. And then there’s the romance. They both have feelings for each other, or at least desires, but they are competing for their lives (or the lives of their parents, really). The tension this causes is spectacular, and when they give in to their desires, the scenes are HOT! Bliss readers who have been looking for a little more steam will be thoroughly satisfied. And readers who love a small town, enemies (or frenemies) to lovers story, will be in heaven.

     4.5 stars.

New author to add to my list.  Well-written, good character development, good (and believable) chemistry between the main characters, overall enjoyable read.  Also key is that this is a WHOLE story, a finished book, and even though there will be more books in the series, this is not a teaser or a come-on just to sell more "parts" of the story.  I laughed out loud at parts of the book, smiled at others, and found myself tearing up at times as well.

I'm always glad to find an author to add to my list, and I found one in Susan Meier.

It took me a long time to like either of the leads in this romance. A long time. They were both hard headed an ungenerous toward each other. They had been this way their whole lives. They are both very competitive and they never talk about what needs to be talk about.

What saved this book is the characters did grow and the conflict the rivalry between two funeral parlor in a small town was both morbid and engaging.

I was given this book for my honest review. So, there you have it.

    more from this reviewer

This is another case that makes me wish I gave half stars. This

This is another case that makes me wish I gave half stars. This book was more than a three, but not quite a four, for me. It was a sweet and sometimes sexy romance between two characters who have known each other most of their lives and have always been ultra-competitve.

Ellie returns home to her small-town to run the family's funeral home after her dad is diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Her former crush, the guy who crushed her and beat her as valedictorian, is back from the Marines and running his family's funeral home as well. They're competitors again after all this time. He wants to buy her out, but she's not giving in. They forge a friendship and grow close again. They can't deny their attraction to each other and come to an agreement to enjoy each other physically, with no strings or expectations, but inevitably, feelings get involved and things become complicated.

I really enjoyed both of these characters – as well as the supporting cast of B.B., Ashley and the others. Ellie and Finn had a ton of chemistry and you could cut the sexual tension with a knife. There are a couple steamy scenes in this book, too. It's a great romance and has a good focus on family – as imperfect as it can be at times. There were a couple scenes that made me more than a little emotional, but the book ended on a note that left me smiling.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

This book was a little slow starting for me, but once it got the momentum, it was hard to put down!!! Ellie McDermott had to return to her home town because her father had been hiding an illness that came to light, and she needed to tie up some loose ends. She planned to come in and stay a few days, get the affairs in order, then return to her life in the big city as an ad executive. She had made a great life for herself in Pittsburg and had no plans of staying in Harmony Hills more than needed, and that was even too long.
After running into her high school rival Finn Donovan, she couldn't wait to get the heck out of that town. Everything they did was a competition, and they went to the extreme with it! After finding out her dad was going to need around the clock care and that would be a huge expense, she decided to run the family funeral home, just to find out that her only competition was the Finn Donovan! So she decides to stay and once again compete with him.  She doesn't count on the old feelings to return with a vengeance and fall for Finn's charms yet again. I won't ruin the end for you, you'll have to read it yourself to find out, but I will say once I hit chapter 10, I couldn't put it down and finished it that night! I am now looking for any of the Donovan Brothers Books series to read. I absolutely loved this one and would love to read more from this author!! The romance she writes about is believable and you can picture yourself as the character. This book has it all, family, competition, rivalry, love, hate, gossip, loss, death, romance, heartache, but will it have a happy ending? You'll just have to read it to find out.

    Cute fun romance

Who knew funeral homes could be romantic? Susan Meier does a great job of weaving sexy banter and emotion.
