    The Best Little Book

It may be a little book physically, but it contains a lot of great info. It includes not only great pictures of the various herbs, but also describes the best climate/site, soil preferred, guidelines for growing, the plants growing habits, flowering time, pest and disease issues if any, how to harvest and store, along with special tips section and other common names for a given plant. It includes a much larger variety of herbs than many other books I have purchased. The front portion of the book is devoted to a great "how-to" on how to really succeed in an herb garden to start with, great for those new and also a good review for the experienced gardener. Covers how to plan "all" the details of your garden. Includes how to propagate your own plants, the use of companion planting, the how to on compost the "right way". The secrets to a successful mainly "organic" herb garden is the authors goal I believe. The book info is very much environmentally oriented and suggests all the natural or organic solutions to issues first, and resorting only as a "last resort" to a botanical insecticide or soap. The how-to on harvesting and storing of various herbs, how to dry them whether for later culinary use or for crafts is included. The back portion of the "little book" is devoted to a numerous variety of ways to use and enjoy herbs, such as crafts, essential oils-different ways of extraction, potpourri how-to, herbal pillows, herbal bathing, candlecraft, tussie mussies, herbal "medicine" with recipes, and herbs in the kitchen, herbal butters, and herbal vinegars, etc. etc. It is an amazingly resourceful book, and is a whole lot more info than I ever expected and very nicely presented. Also an absolutely wonderful bargain getting it while in the "half price" books.
