Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Laura J. Brown
Emily Summers is a young girl who loves horses. She has been around them all of her life. Recently, she moved with her father from New Jersey to Oregon. Now they are at the Running Horse Ridge, a horse rescue ranch that belongs to her father's family and is managed by her Aunt Debbie. Emily feels so out of place at the ranch. She did not grow up around her aunt or her cousins, and they do not seem to be very friendly. In fact, she does not even think they want her around. Her dad is too busy to spend much time with her, and that just makes her feel even more out of place and alone. Although Emily knows a lot about horses, her Aunt Debbie will not let her ride any of the show horses. Aunt Debbie does not even trust her around the horses. What makes things even worse is that Emily's beloved horse is stuck at a horse ranch back home in New Jersey, and Emily is not sure how long she and her dad will be in Oregon. She is about to give up hope of ever being happy when she meets a ranch hand named Caitlyn who is about her age. Then, a number of neglected horses from a nearby ranch are rescued and brought to the ranch. Aunt Debbie, her dad, and the entire staff is overwhelmed with taking care of them. Finally, Aunt Debbie allows Emily to care of one horse. Can Emily prove to her aunt, her dad, and herself that she can help the little horse? Readers will enjoy finding out. Book two of the "Running Horse Ridge" series. Reviewer: Laura J. Brown

    Colts

Sky and Fang trot in their mane copped short to get the stained blood out. Kyle, a brown and white colt trots over to them laughing. "In my tribe, if someone cut off our manes they would die. Our manes mean everything to us."
