Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
The seven high school studentsfour ``Dudes'' and three ``Dudettes,'' but known collectively as Bear Flatters (of tiny Bear Flats, Idaho)live too far from Pineville to take a school bus every day, so they spend Monday through Thursday nights at the Scenic-Vu Motel in Pineville. Jake Callahan, 17, the oldest, is the group's leader, and he works diligently at enforcing its two (and only) rules: Study Hard and Have Fun. Jake is the lively, albeit unwilling, chronicler of the Bear Flatters' activities; his senior English assignment is to keep a journal. The frequently hilarious goings-on are rendered in Jake's wry style, and characterization is excellent, from the motel's landlady to the snobbish town girl whom Jake adores, to his wise-guy roommates. Readers won't wonder why Jake receives a standing ovation for his journal at the end of the school year. Ages 12-up. (April)

Gr 7-9 Jake Callahan, a Pine Valley High senior, finds himself in charge of a group of six fellow students (three Dudes and three Dudettes) who are be ing housed at the Scenic-Vu Motel be cause the daily three-hour round trip to school from their homes in remote Bear Flats is impractical. He plunges into a total immersion project in Motel Man agement, cajoling the others into fol lowing his two rules (``1. Study hard. 2. Have fun.'') and learning to cooperate. He wins over the skeptical motel own er, holds the line against junk food, and motivates all six of his charges to make the honor roll in his efforts to boost the Bear Flatters' image. The story unfolds through entries from Jake's journal for English class, which aptly convey the frustrations and surprises of this bi zarre senior year. While events are pre dictable, the Bear Flatters' escapades and the fresh story line will hold the interest of readers seeking an amusing, fast-paced book. Merilyn S. Burring ton, Vergennes Union High School, Vt.
