Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joni Lucas
Writer and illustrator Mary Murphy's dogs frolic through the seasons in this colorful book designed to help children learn about the different events and activities each season offers. The bright, lush colors and simple pictures of dogs playing outside and gardening in the spring, having a picnic in the summer, picking apples in the fall and keeping warm in the winter will give toddlers a n introduction to the seasons as they continue to explore the ever-widening world around them. There is basic text on each page that describes the event and introduces important concepts such as sharing, cleaning up and social interaction. The book is printed on heavy paper stock, which will wear well as small hands turn the pages many times over. The illustrations also offer opportunities for family members and caregivers to develop their own story-telling abilities and teach and reinforce growing vocabularies.

PreSThrough short sentences and dialogue bubbles, a mother dog and her pup describe what they do and see during each season. Here comes spring! The apple blossoms fly in the breeze. We do some work in the garden. Spring, summer, fall, and winter are each allotted three double-page spreads. Jewel-toned colors outlined in thick black lines will hold the attention of infants and toddlers for one-on-one sharing or storytime use. While there is no compelling story, the sweet illustrations carry the book. Fans of Eric Hills Spot series (Putnam) will appreciate this offering, as will preschool teachers who are always looking for books about the seasons.Lisa Falk, Los Angeles Public Library. Kirkus Reviews
Readers journey through the seasons with puppies whose behavior resembles that of preschoolers. They dodge falling apple blossoms in spring, have a picnic with friends in summer, pick apples and jump in piles of leaves in fall, and have a snowball fight in winter. Murphy (Caterpillar's Wish, p. 454, etc.) captures the joy and surprises inherent in the arrival of the seasons, making this book a real heartwarmer. The bright coloring of her illustrations engages readers, as the puppies find a new adventure around every corner; the text is a terrific one to read a loud, subtly conveying with humor some time-honored lessons on ecology, sharing, and cooperation.
