Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This toddler-friendly, oversize storybook is very appealing. Large illustrations are paired with a large font, for an attractive combination. The kitten on the cover does not like the rain and is upset to see a cloud in the sky. When the kitten tries to outrun it, the cloud follows, and more clouds appear. Finally it rains, and the kitten discovers that "the rain is cool...and tickly...and gentle...and clean...and...LOVELY!" Mary Murphy knows her audience, and this book is a winner. 2000, Dorling Kindersley, $5.95. Ages 6 mo. to 3. Reviewer: Candace Deisley

PreS-Brightly illustrated and well-written picture books. In the first story, a baby enjoys all the kisses and hugs he receives from different members of his family, and he also loves to give them back. The affectionate, round-faced tyke is reminiscent of Helen Oxenbury's babies. In the second title, a tiger-striped kitten runs from an ominous cloud, uttering the refrain, "I HATE the rain." When it finally comes down, he realizes, "The rain is cool-and tickly-and gentle-and clean-and LOVELY! I LOVE the rain!" The appealing illustrations, outlined in heavy black lines, depict a bucolic setting with myriad cuddly animals. The large, simple page layout and design of both entries are well suited to their young audience.-Shanla Brookshire, Lovett Memorial Library, Pampa, TX Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
