Children's Literature
This is an informative, fun, repetitive book that focuses on the wildlife and grand landscape of Antarctica. The text follows the style of "The Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly," repeating what readers have just learned on previous pages. Each spread adds one sentence to the mix, and little ones will enjoy being able to repeat the story parts as it unfolds. Icebergs, seals, orcas, penguins and fish jump off the pages in intricate and beautiful illustrations. The picture-text correlation is outstanding and would work well for struggling readers or English learners in the classroom. This book would also be extremely beneficial as a teaching tool for the food chain, as many of the sea animals dine on one another throughout the tale. At the end, there is a brief summary that includes information about the climate, the creation of icebergs, the different types of animal life and the challenges that Antarctica faces from global warming and tourism. A rhythmic, cumulative text and detailed acrylic paintings emphasizing the pinks, blues and grays of the icy sea and sky introduce the relationships among animals in the Antarctic ecosystem. Each double-page spread adds another animal: two species of seals, orcas, krill, petrel, silverfish, skua and three species of penguins. Like other books in the Web of Life series, this concludes with a brief explanation of the area and the animals mentioned (allowing the careful reader to distinguish the different seals and penguins illustrated). While the meter hiccups occasionally, the familiar, House-that-Jack-Built pattern will appeal to young listeners, and the repetition is a boon for early readers. Unfortunately, both the illustrations and the repeated " . . . icebergs / all jagged and spiked / that rise from the sea / in this cold world of ice" might leave the impression that the penguins have no land home at all; in fact, they breed on land or pack ice, and the presence of icebergs can actually hamper their reproduction. Teachers will welcome this appealing introduction but should supplement it with other information. (Informational picture book. 4-7)

    Highly Recommended

    This is a beautiful book. It's the most recent in a wonderful series by Madeleine Dunphy. I have given all of Dunphy's books to my nieces and nephews and young friends over the years and they have all been big hits. 'Here is Antarctica' is beautifully written and the illustrations are absolutely gorgeous! Dunphy's writing is always entertaining and educational. It's the perfect way for children to learn about this important subject without being preachy. Highly recommended!
