Overview

…Here is the water both shallow and still that soaks the soil of this murky, moist world:
Here is the wetland.

It is known as the wetland. Atop its glittering surface and below in its shadowy depths, birds, bass, minks, and muskrats struggle to survive and flourish. Madeleine Dunphy’s lyrical prose provides a clear understanding of how each living creature links to the other in a vital chain of life.

Artist Wayne McLoughlin adds a stunning visual perspective with luminously detailed paintings that convey the fragile beauty and complexity of this fascinating and critically important ecological community.

Uses a cumulative approach to describe the wetland ecology of a freshwater marsh, the most common type of wetland in North America.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
A wetland is a place where water soaks the soil and all sorts of plants and animals live in this moist environment. The cumulative text tells about how the plants and animals are interrelated. McLoughlin's exquisite illustrations of the cattails, muskrat, birds, frogs, snakes and the like reinforce this message and provide a stunning visual visit to a freshwater wetland. The last page provides a brief note on wetlands and the animals depicted in the book. Also in the series are Here Is the Arctic Winter, Here Is the Southwestern Desert, and Here is the Tropical Rainforest.
From The Critics
K-Gr 3-An excellent addition to books on the environment. Many children will be familiar with freshwater marshes and the animals and plants portrayed here, but this picture book is accessible to those readers who are not. Cumulative phrases, reminiscent of "This is the house that Jack built," give a pleasant cadence to the text, which paints a picture of this ecological community. McLoughlin's attractive, full-paged, colorful paintings capture wetland life. An address for the National Audubon Society completes this beautiful package.-Blair Christolon, Prince William Library, Manassas, VA
