Children's Literature - Jane Jessell
Lovely, muted watercolors shine in a fresh and lively retelling of a classic children's rhyme. Fifteen new verses are added to this familiar children's song, outlining the friendly battle between a jolly gardener and a band of mischievous and wily garden pests who are determined to find a way into the rows of corn and peas and radishes. The game begins as the gardener declares, "Oh, how I love to dig and hoe, scatter my seeds row by row." The fat and sassy rabbits reply, "Oh, how we love to pull up roots, nibble on fresh and tender shoots." Woodchucks, raccoons, mice, and deer join forces to outwit the industrious gardener, whose fences and netting are no match for the ingenious animals. Children will love the glee with which the critters enjoy their victory and cheer as the raccoons slip away hugging ears of corn, and as deer scamper off with mouthfuls of berries. All is forgiven, as the gardener is last seen reading Gardens for Sharing.

PreS-Gr 1-The traditional nursery rhyme is expanded into a lively story when pesky insects and animals invade the garden. "Oh, how we love to pull up roots,/Nibble on fresh and tender shoots,/Fill up on plump and juicy fruits,/In spring when plants are growing." No amount of fencing deters the scavengers that jump over, tunnel under, and slink through holes in the netting; raccoons easily open the gate. So, in the end, all of the animals feast on a bumper crop while the good-natured gardener throws up her hands and sings, "Here we go 'round the mulberry bush-'Round and 'round each year!" Humorous, whimsical watercolors depict the devious crew stealing off with the bounty and outwitting the human who seems resigned, yet again. A good choice for reading aloud.-Sally R.
