Praise for A Heretic's Guide to Eternity

"If Spencer Burke is a heretic, it's not because he's teaching dangerous doctrine, but because he asks the questions about faith that today's sensibilities naturally raise. Spencer is a winsome walking companion for those who find traditional dogma too narrow."

Overview

Praise for A Heretic's Guide to Eternity

"If Spencer Burke is a heretic, it's not because he's teaching dangerous doctrine, but because he asks the questions about faith that today's sensibilities naturally raise. Spencer is a winsome walking companion for those who find traditional dogma too narrow."
—Marshall Shelley, editor, Leadership Journal; vice president, Christianity Today

"Fearless of being burned at the stake, Burke presents his provocative thoughts on the world no longer needing the Church. With a new approach to the heretics of the past, he forces readers to re-examine their thoughts about the Church, universalism, and grace. . . . His assertion that grace is something that we can opt out of but not opt in to will turn the heads of many people who thought they had this whole Christianity thing figured out."
—Relevant Magazine

"Distinguishing between religion and spirituality, Burke offers what he calls a new way of looking at God, one centered on the idea of grace. He emphasizes a God who is looking to save the world, not a God who seems more intent on condemning certain practices. . . . For Burke, God is to be questioned, not simply obeyed. His challenging thesis will appeal to many people today who have given up on organized religion but still seek some connection to spirituality."
—Library Journal

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Burke, a former pastor who now works as a retreat master and lecturer and runs the web site TheOoze.com, is a heretic in the same way, he says, that Jesus was a heretic-he questions the dictates of his religion from the inside. Distinguishing between religion and spirituality, Burke offers what he calls a new way of looking at God, one centered on the idea of grace. He emphasizes a God who is looking to save the world, not a God who seems more intent on condemning certain practices. Quoting from both the Bible and contemporary rock lyrics, Burke argues that traditional religion is coming to an end-that people are looking for transformative religious experiences, not dictates to be followed. He further insists that there needs to be a change in how religion is presented to the masses. For Burke, God is to be questioned, not simply obeyed. His challenging thesis will appeal to many people today who have given up on organized religion but still seek some connection to spirituality. Recommended for all religion collections.-Augustine J. What People are saying about this

From the Publisher
"Newsflash! Luther’s church at Wittenberg has a back door! Spencer Burke has found it and removed it from its’ hinges. The old church has now been flooded with sorely needed illumination and a refreshing, life-giving breeze. Yet, there’s more. The door Burke has blown through is a passageway that leads us outside, beyond the building, to the bountiverse, a new dimension for living Christian spirituality that is transforming, rejuvenating and ripe for living…now. Read this book! Live this life! Trust me. This isn’t just a great book. It’s a sincere, deep, heartfelt invitation to journey beyond wherever you’re at, embracing the God of More. Thank you Spencer!"
