Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lynn O'Connell
The Middle Ages was a time of disease, witchcraft, religion and treason against the crown. This dramatic work of fiction addresses all these aspects of the time period. Annie was exploring the ruins of a medieval abbey. Unexpectedly, she discovered the tomb of Lady Isabella Devereaux, a woman who was condemned as a heretic in 1349. When Annie picked up a mysterious amulet, she was transported back to the Middle Ages and into Isabella's tomb. Acting quickly, Annie saved Isabella from death and together they worked to change history. Isabella was a woman who traveled around the area treating illnesses, including the feared Black Death. In an effort to find a cure for the plague, she traveled deep into the forest and met with "the madman." Before he died, he gave her two books—one with recipes for healing potions and the other, a book of magical spells. After Isabella's own family died from the Black Death, Sir Roger courted her in an effort to acquire her extensive land holdings. When she declined his offer of marriage, he charged her with treason. Her sentence: to be buried alive. Together with Annie, Isabella righted the wrong that had been done her and used magic to save lives. At the book's end, she realized the danger of magic and destroyed the two books. Reviewer: Lynn O'Connell
