Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Bestselling Christian author Lucado appears in the opening moments of this animated video, introducing his most recent project, "A Just Like Jesus Story" starring Hermie the caterpillar. Hermie, voiced by Tim Conway, laments the fact that he is ordinary-not strong like an ant, beautiful like a ladybug or resourceful like a snail. Each time he compares his shortcomings to the seemingly superior attributes of another creature, Hermie prays to God, asking about his predicament. The reply comes, "I'm not finished with you yet." Of course, Hermie doesn't understand God's wisdom until he transforms into a butterfly (as does his pal Wormie, voiced by Don Knotts). Lucado appears at the story's end to explain that God does not necessarily "give us new wings," but he "gives us a new heart." Unfortunately, the message may be a bit muffled for some young viewers who see Hermie accepting himself only after he's no longer a caterpillar. Quality animation (paying homage to Antz and A Bug's Life), music and voice talent buoy this effort. Ages 3-up. (Jan.) FYI: Simultaneous release with picture book and board book.
Children's Literature
Hermie is a common caterpillar without spots or stripes. He and his friend Wormie explain their distress to God who tells them, "I love you as you are, but I'm not finished with you yet." They feel better until they see an ant carrying a pine cone. They ask God why they can't be that strong. God's answer is the same, "I love you as you are, but I'm not finished with you yet." They feel better until they see a snail with a house. They see a ladybug with lovely spots. Each time they ask for something to make them special, God's answer is the same. Then Hermie falls asleep and wakes up as a beautiful butterfly. He is delighted and tells his friend Wormie that it could also happen to him. Our famous storyteller gives a new twist to the Ugly Duckling tale. The animation is reminiscent of Shrek, and is more appealing to children than adults. This book is grouped with "Just Like Jesus" books for adults. 2002, Tommy Nelson/Thomas Nelson, Ages 3 to 7.

PreS-Gr 1-In this problematic story about self-acceptance, Hermie is an ordinary caterpillar, unhappy with his lack of special abilities or distinguishing marks. When he and his friend Wormie go to God to ask why they are so ordinary, the only answer they get is, "I'm not finished with you yet." Hermie comes up with several plans to become less ordinary: he convinces Wormie to drop a beehive on his back so that he can be like a snail, attempts to catch a heavy acorn to prove he is strong like an ant, and concocts a dangerous plan involving blueberry stains to give him spots, all with disastrous results. These incidents inject slapstick humor into the story, and also a healthy dose of pop-culture references (such as Hermie spouting "I'll be back," after the pinecone incident). In the end, of course, Hermie accepts that it is okay to be a common caterpillar, just before God turns him into a beautiful butterfly. This conflicting message of self-acceptance and change may confuse many in the target audience, and the story is unfortunately drawn out past the attention span of many in that group as well. Despite the star power fueling this production (it was written by bestselling author Max Lucado; Tim Conway and Don Knotts provide the voices of Hermie and Wormie), the whole is unfortunately less than the sum of its parts.-Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Maryland School for the Deaf, Columbia Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
