Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Della A. Yannuzzi
Hermit crabs may be an unusual, less than first-choice pet, but they are far from boring and uninteresting as shown in this "Far-Out and Unusual Pets" addition to the "Cool Pets!" series. Hermit crabs are fun to watch as they maneuver along in their shell homes. Most hermit crabs live in the sea, but some types live on land. The land ones are the ones that are kept as pets. Hermit crabs have distinguishing features besides living in empty snail shells. They have funny eyes that sit at the end of long tube-shaped stalks. They also have ten legs and strong claws. Hermit crabs can be friendly in their own way. They grow accustomed to handling and will poke their heads out of their shells at familiar and soft voices. They will even walk on people's hands and arms, although their claws may pinch a bit. One of the most interesting things about hermit crabs is their ability to shed their outer covering or exoskeleton. When this is going to happen, they may stop eating, and they dig into the sand or leaves and wait for the old skin to crack. Then they wriggle out, brand new and fresh with a new exoskeleton. The crab then eats the old shell. Hermit crabs are easy pets to take care of; they need only food and water, a supply of different size shells, and a clean, safe home of sand or dirt, stones and twigs to climb upon. The authors supply all of the information needed to help young readers take care of their new, cool pet. Backmatter includes a word glossary, a list of resources for further reading, and a list of web sites. Photographs are in color. Reviewer: Della A. Yannuzzi
