Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
Children have always been fascinated by hermit crabs, and it is easy to see why they are so fascinating. Hermit crabs live in discarded sea shells. They live in and out of the ocean; they change shells as they grow, and they eat all manner of foods. This breathtakingly illustrated book tells the story of one hermit crab, from when she floats as a tiny egg in the Caribbean Sea, then grows into something that looks like a hermit crab and finally finds a shell, to when she becomes a land hermit crab with a large left claw and gills that enable her to breathe air. Finally, Hermit Crab leaves the Virgin Islands beach to live in the forest beyond. From there, the author describes Hermit Crab's life: finding food, fresh water to drink, hiding in cool, shady places during hot days, molting, and avoiding predators and larger hermit crabs who may want her shell. When she outgrows her shell and finds an empty West Indian top shell atop a child-made sand castle, the children who built the sand castle and decorated it with their favorite sea shell go looking for it. Once they find Hermit Crab, they pick her up, examine her gently, and return her to her shady daytime spot. The book concludes with Hermit Crab traveling down to the ocean, mating, and laying eggs that will float, grow, and move on. This is a lovely book. It includes additional information about hermit crabs, a glossary, and points of interest. The author writes beautifully, giving young readers some sound effects as well as avoiding anthropomorphism by calling the main character Hermit Crab. Well done! This would be a splendid book for a child or classroom that keeps a hermit crab pet. Reviewer: Judy Crowder
