Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Author Arlene Bourgeois Molzahn has written an interesting and easy-to-read, forty-eight picture book about the explorer Hernan Cortes. This book, part of the "Explorers" series by Enslow Publishers, is filled with colorful illustrations, maps, and drawings. The first chapter of six begins with the early history of Mexico and continues on with Cortes' early life and education and his desire to become an explorer. In 1504, Cortes began his exploration by sailing to Hispaniola, a Spanish colony started by Christopher Columbus and now home to Haiti and the Dominican Republic. He lived there for several years until 1511, when he traveled to Cuba and lived for seven years on land given to him by the governor. He expanded his adventures by traveling to Mexico in search of gold and silver and met the Aztec people along the coast of Mexico. The Aztec chief, Montezuma, gave Cortes gold, but he didn't want him to come to the city of Tenochtitlan. Cortes marched on the city, defeated Montezuma, and captured Tenochtitlan. Eventually, Cortes took control of the rest of Mexico. He built Mexico City on Aztec ruins and brought Christianity to the people. Included are a timeline, words to know, books to read, and Internet sites. The visuals increase the appeal of this book. 2003, Enslow Publishers, Yannuzzi
