The Washington Post
Closer to home, Donna Jackson spotlights the bravery of man's best friend in the highly readable Hero Dogs: Courageous Canines in Action. Much of Jackson's book concentrates on the work that dogs did in New York in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks: searching for human life underneath the rubble, finding the remains of those who died and comforting the rescuers in a way that perhaps no person could do. Jackson also relates the dramatic story of a man whose guide dog helped lead him safely from the 78th floor of One World Trade Center. — Karen MacPherson

School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-Bright, full-color photos draw young readers into this mishmash of profiles of exceptional canines and their appreciative owners. The first two-thirds of the book revolves around some of the dogs employed in search-and-rescue efforts at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, attacks. Two- to six-page rambling chapters highlight the roles they played in trying to locate survivors, often suffering from inhalation problems and incurring falls. After the 9/11 theme comes a quintet of stories of canine heroes ranging from a baby-rescuing nonprofessional golden retriever to an explosives-sniffing Lab on the government payroll. Throughout the book, Jackson discusses how dogs are chosen and prepared for their different careers. Despite its mediocre execution and poor organization, this offering will appeal to pet lovers.-John Sigwald, Unger Memorial Library, Plainview, TX Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
The terrorist attacks of 9/11 provide a focus for this photo-documentary on the many ways dogs support and succor humans. From the story of Roselle, a seeing-eye dog who led her owner safely out of the World Trade Center, to the search-and-rescue dogs who scoured the rubble, to Tikva, a therapy dog who provided an outlet for the traumatized rescue workers, Jackson details the incredible canine-human partnerships that played a part in the aftermath of the attacks. She moves on from 9/11 to expand her focus to include members of the Department of Agriculture's Beagle Brigade, Canine Companions for Independence, bomb-sniffing dogs, and regular old pets who take the initiative to assume a hero's role within the family. Each type of dog is discussed by introducing one or two specific individuals; this provides a series of mini-narratives, punctuated by color photographs and interviews with the handlers and owners, drawing readers into their respective dramas and personalizing the experiences. The narrative is notably restrained, eschewing the maudlin and letting the stories tell themselves. (glossary, further reading, Web sites, museum exhibit) (Nonfiction. 8-13)

    Wicked Awesome!!

This book was so good, I couldn't put it down. I went to a book signing in Providence and met the wonderful author herself and Nikie and Frank Shane (The dog and handler on the book's cover). I was so entranced by this books beautiful stories and it's cleverness. Mrs. Jackson and all the books characters were just so great to read about. I highly recommend this book to any one! Bone appetit! ( I stole this from Mrs. Jackson herself when she signed my copy!!!!)

    Cheers for Courageous Canines!

What a terrifically written and illustrated set of stories about our heroes -- both two and four-pawed! You'll have tears of sadness upon reading about Sirius and tears of joy time and time again, story after story. A great read for kids and adults alike!
