Kirk Franklin's seventh album, Hero, is special in more ways than one. The disc is his second as the sole titular artist -- no Family, God's Property, or budding protégé to introduce to the world -- and his first-ever all-out studio album, a prospect that gives him more leverage to try new things and push the envelope in ways that doing a live recording wouldn't let him. Franklin is unique in that he's more a master of ceremonies and choir leader than anything else, which means Hero's ambitious, often intricate compositions are meant for others to sing and make their own. In this case, the guest list is an endless parade of gospel luminaries new and established, including Yolanda Adams, Dorinda Clark-Cole, Marvin Winans, J. Moss, Tye Tribbett, and Franklin's own terrific backup vocalists. Not surprisingly, these collaborations represent Hero's churchier side, which can range from explosive ("Could've Been") and dramatic ("Hero") one moment to demure and understated the next ("Afterwhile," "Brokenhearted"). Stylistically, though, Franklin is at his best when he ventures outside of gospel into realms his peers rarely visit, like disco-pop ("Looking for You"), classic R&B ("Keep Your Head"), '80s pop
ock ("Let It Go"), and soul ("Why," featuring none other than Stevie Wonder). It's these out of the box experiments with their winsome throwback samples, horns, thumping beats, and those versatile backup vocalists that reveal the why of Franklin's superstar status in gospel: he's not just an artist, but a multifaceted entertainer, producer, songwriter, and arranger -- a tireless renaissance man who has rightfully earned his place as the best-selling artist in the history of the genre he loves.

    A New Me

This entire cd was outstanding but "Imagine Me" really hit home for me. I was going through a lot and it really helped me realize that I need to put all my trust in Jesus and learn to love myself before I tried to love someone else. Now I truly believe that Jesus is the only thing that can heal the scars left by life's battle wounds.

Divorced White Chick Finds Accidental Healing

I was channel surfing and stumbled on the Stellar Awards. Kirk Franklin pulled me in thru the flat screen of my life that now has dimension previously unknown. His amazing stage production/rendition of 'Let It Go' changed every stereotyped thought I ignorantly held --along with misguided notions of who the 'real' men are...washed away...the girl let it go. Now there is room...to let love in. Thank you Kirk!

Mix of Gospel and Funk and Praise

If there is one dynamic person who is an example of the redemptiveness of following of the Christian Faith and does not back down from it, it is Kirk Franklin.

    Fresh and Soul Soothing

The lyrics and music are explosive. Kirk keeps it real. It's an uplifting and encouraging album, for ALL BELIEVERS. Kirk allowes God to speak His love through him. This is FRESH, heart felt balm from God to sooth the hurt. This is not a remix of the same old, same old. BUY IT NOW.

    Another great hit!

Kirk does it again, giving us awesome music to worship to. A lot of the music hits close to home and the song titled "Looking For You" always brings me up when the devil's trying to get me down.

Mr. Franklin has a classic here!

This is one of the best CDs out there no matter what the catagory. I am 41 and I love it but I can see where some oldheads will not like it. If you want very good music with a true message this is a must have. Parents must buy for their teens in this day and age. It has a message they will understand. This was worth the waite.

    OUTSTANDING

KIRK IS WRITTING AND SINGING THE HEART BEAT OF GOD TO HURTING AND STRUGGLING PEOPLE IN THE KINGDOM OF GOD WHO MAY BE TO AFRAID TO SAY WHAT THEIR REALLY GOING THROUGHT BECAUSE THE CHURCH IS TO AFRAID TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE EVEN AFTER THE HOLY GHOST COME ON YOU THE STRUGGLE SOMETIMES IS STILL THERE.

    A Masterpiece

This is the most honest album of contemporary gospel music I've ever heard. Brilliant! It speaks of human struggles, life and death, but gives glory to the Lord Jesus Christ. Radical and cutting edge, this is the direction of gospel today. These are messages from the street. It reminds me of Larry Norman's songs with it's honesty.
