The late James Brady commanded a Marine rifle platoon during the Korean War and was awarded a Bronze Star for valor. For more than two decades, he wrote the “In Step With” column for Parade.     A Disgrace

    A hero like Basilone deserved a lot better than this hackneyed attempt at a monograph (it's barely a biography and I won't insult historians by calling this a history). It reads more like an author's notes than an actual finished product. What's worse is it is an author who clearly has an ax to grind.
    For whatever reason,(perhaps the foresight not to entrust such a story to an old magazine hack), the Basilone family made themselves mostly unavailable to the author and therefore suffers his unrelentless attacks.

    The book is researched....um, well, I guess it is - I mean we have the author's notes, complete with questions and nitpicking details (wrong boots on the bronze statue - seriously?)...it's hard to say how well researched because we get everything the author read just dumped on the page without a filter or educated evaluation. 90 year old eyewitnesses are taken to task because their memories and recollections don't always jive with each other's - its this type of amateurish ridiculousness that would have led me to throwing this crap across the room, except I was reading it on my Nook (found a problem with the e-reader revolution - no frustrated throwing of books...)

    At his "best", the author sounds like an old ex-Vet sitting at a Legion bar and nitpicking Hollywood's newest war movie (I'm related to one - I am well versed in how much fun that is)...at worst he sounds like a vindictive old man who should have left one less book behind.

    A Few Really Interesting Parts...Many That Are Just Plain Disappointing...I Was Looking for Much More About "What It Would Have Been Like as a Marine in the Pacific"

    This book is about a REAL hero but if you are looking for a book that paints a picture of what it was like in a fierce battle than this book is NOT the one to buy. I was disappointed in this book...expecting to learn more about Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima (where John was killed)...instead I found these sequences relatively short and sweet and when presented, filled with uncertainty leading the reader to somehow decipher the true events (if the author can't do it than how are we supposed to do it?). More than 50% of the book is about John's time in Australia (after the battles on Guadalcanal) and back in the states (after the battle on Guadalcanal where he fought in a battle that led him to win the medal of honor)where he participated in war bond rallies.

    All was interesting, but very little "action" and Mr. Brady felt compelled to present a wide variety of view points with respect to "what really happened" in the various battles. The presentation around John's death on Iwo Jima was particularly frustrating to read...he'd share one persons view and then "rip it apart with commentaries stating why that point of view was not valid"...at which point I found myself asking...if it was not a valid perspective why did you present it in the first place? Then he would do the same with another 4 or 5 perspectives...I guess he felt like it was more accurate to report all views rather than one...for me it was aggravating...I was expecting for Brady to be able to tell the reader.

    This is a disappointing book (after reading 5 other books by Mr. Brady)...this one was perhaps the biggest disappointment of all...regrettably it is his last book (he died shortly after finishing the book...according to the preface).

    If you want a book that helps you understand the battles on Guadalcanal and what is was like to be a Marine in those battles....I would suggest this is NOT the book for you.

    hero of the pacific........not to this writer

    it seems the author is more interested in discrediting previous writings and family recollections than in praising the exploits of the marine he wrote about. contradicting statements and accounts with minutia based upon his being a former marine makes one wonder why he bothered to write this.

    An Unheroic Effort

    This book was not up to Brady's usual standards. It was disjointed and less informative than I expected. I would not recommend this book.

    WWII buffs - a must read.

    Mr. Brady writes and gives you the impression that you can see and feel the fighting of the Marines on Guadalcanal. He also allows you the insight of how the homefront felt about their heroes. Mr. Basilone was just a "regular guy" that stepped up to do the out of the ordinary task during the war. Makes you wish you could have met the guy. To Mr. Basilone and to other Marines then and now............Semper Fi
