More About This Book

Overview

Hero Wanted launches the comical Jason Cosmo fantasy adventure series by Dan McGirt.

Jason Cosmo is perfectly happy as a humble woodcutter in the village of Lower Hicksnittle-until a foppish stranger tries to kill him, claiming there is a huge price on Jason's head. Ten million gold carats is enough to put Arden's best-and worst-bounty hunters on his trail. It seems Jason has become the most feared man in the Eleven Kingdoms--which is news to Jason!

On the run from mercenaries, Demon Lords, and the full might of the sinister Dark Magic Society, Jason teams up with cynical wizard Mercury Boltblaster and winsome twins Sapphrina and Rubis to learn the truth.

Driven by the Laws of Narrative, Jason's quest will take him from the bright realm of The Gods to the deadly depths of the Incredibly Dark Forest-and into a final confrontation with the forces of evil. Followed by an even more final confrontation. And then a sort of wrapping up loose ends scene. If he lives that long...

    I Also Recommend:

    Fun and entertaining. Light read.

I did't expect much of this title because it was a free e-book. However, I found it fun and entertaining. If you are a serious sci-fi fantasy fan, you may not like it. But, if wit and word play don't destroy a plot for you, this is a light read. I laughed out loud a couple times. It isn't meant to be a serious book, just fun.

Might be cute for a youngster

Just silly and full of deliberately odd names and poorly developed characters. Would possibly be good for a very young kid, much too derivative and shallow for the adult reader who has read many of these type of books, I'm sorry to say i couldn't finish it.

    Funny, fast paced and engrossing

Got this as a free ebook - hooked me in immediately and read it all in one day. Light hearted fun with lots of puns that reminded me of Robert Aspirin's MythConceptions series I had read as a kid! enjoyable for any fan of fantasy novels, it unabashedly pokes fun at itself. I would have paid full price for this book, and plan to buy the sequel.

    Hero Wanted

If you enjoyed Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, you will love this comical fantasy story of Jason Cosmo. A woodcutter by trade, forced to be a hero by destiny and possibly a case of mistaken identity. As Jason flees his hometown of Lower Hicksnittle, he finds unlikely allies in a wizard, Mercury Boltblaster, and the seductive twins, Sapphrina and Rubis. A very entertaining tale with all the classic fantasy elements.

    I Also Recommend:

A hilarious & enjoyable escape from everyday fantasy!

As an avid fantasy lover, I was a little skeptical when I first downloaded this free e-book after the last serveral were horrible. However, I knew several pages in that this was going to be a good read.

If you are looking for substance, this book is not for you. This is a fun parody of every fantasy novel you've ever read. In fact, it pokes fun at itself, the reader, and the genre several times throughout the book. It does have a predictable (but whimsical) plot and stereotypical (yet believeable) characters, and the writing is fluid, if a little simplistic.

All in all, I would have paid for this book, and I plan to get the next one when it comes out!

    It's OK

It was something to read and pass the time, but I am glad it was a free book. It took me a while to get into it, but I pushed through and it turned out to be an alright read. I am still undecided as to whether I should read another, because this is just the first book...

    Cheesy, simplistic fantasy writing

Imagine reading a less-polished, less-entertaining Terry Pratchett book. That's what Hero Wanted is. It may be free, but I'd personally recommend paying for a better book from Pratchett's Discworld series. Initially I thought this was a kid's book, but it's not that: it's a simplistic adult's book. McGirt has a preoccupation with alliteration and silly word play, often at the expense of the story. And the story itself is entertaining but incredibly lacking: a farmboy with no experience is called on to save the world, accompanied by his sidekick. And yet their adventures plod along, with other people continually ensuring their survival as both the heroes and the reader are pushed from page to page.

    Silly captivating fun

A fun hero who run amuck of a role he doesn't want. Enjoyable in its corny sort of way. I just love to keep reading it, even when I need to put it down.

This book was so funny, I literally found myself laughing out loud. I've always been a reader of the fantasy/sci-fi genre, it was so refreshing to read a story that was really & filled with humor. I will definitely check out the next one & other books by this author. Enjoy!

Quick, ok story but some cheesy moments.

There was a decent story, but sarcasm is difficult to pull off that frequently. Cheesy moments such as a moonbuck coffee break to save the day.

I persevered through the book and gave it a two stars because I did not give up, but it was really not very good.

    Fun, Fast Fantasy

This is a quick little fantasy novel with an intentionally humorous bent. I found myself laughing out loud at some parts. Its not all prat falls though, the story here is pretty good too. Not a great book, but a definitely a fun one.

    WOW!!

I want to start by saying I am no fan of most of the fantasy genre. Too boring, predictable and political for me. But this novel...wow! I really loved this book! It has all the traditional elements (a quest, wizard, etc.), but with a light, humorous twist that avoids being campy. It's action packed and the characters are well developed. I can't recommend this book enough. I thoroughly enjoyed it. To the author: another novel, please!

    Laugh out Loud Funny

This book was pretty hysterical. It poked fun at all the typical fantasy novels in a very clever way. I found the characters entertaining and familiar. If anyone loves fantasy novels and wants a great break this is the one to read.

This was a really fun comedy fantasy...nothing too serious and lots of chuckles to keep me reading! Really enjoyed and will look forward to more books by the author
