Gr 6 Up Russian folklore receives the same somewhat sensationalized treatment as other books in this series. The fantastic elements found in Russian folkloredemons, wizards, and wondrous creatureshave been emphasized over the equally prominent folk elements. Yet the tales are well-researched, based upon the original Russian story collections (Afanas'ev and Potebnya, among others) and are written in a readable style. Well-known characters such as Baba Yaga, Prince Ivan, Vasilisa, and the Firebird appear in several familiar tales. Also included is useful information about old Russia, its oral tradition, religious climate, pre-Christian beliefs, and even an explanation of the Russian alphabet. The drawings and full-color paintings by a contemporary Russian artist are luxurious in eerie detail. A book which has more to offer than merely stories of heroes, monsters, and other worlds.
